Welcome to ShreddyStudio!
This store is your portal into my paintings and art, especially my works that predominantly use traditional (non-digital) techniques like pencil, pen and ink, watercolour, oil paint, or acrylic paints. I am a huge fan of Canada's Group of Seven, so items here tend to be my landscapes. There items are actual paintings.
For more budget-conscience patrons, reproductions of many of my pieces can also be found at my online shops at Society6 and RedBubble, so if you have a huge wall to fill your favourite Dennis Weber painting can still find a place in your home and also include pieces in digital creations too, sometimes more esoteric and adventuresome image-making, things like pop-art, kitsch, design and illustration.
What characterizes my paintings? Usually layers. I love processes that involve layers and build-up of colour and very often I use a varnish glazing process. In short, many of my items are made gradually over days, weeks, or months. A few washes of colour here, a few marks there, then seal it with varnish. Let it cure. Contemplate. Repeat. A consequence of this process is that many of my paintings have a richness and vibrancy of colour that is not possible otherwise.
Some of my pieces are more spontaneous and do not follow the process... and that is a consequence of being someone who loves making designs and images... I am always making something new.
Hope you enjoy your visit to my shop and spread the word. Thanks for visiting my store. And try visiting or Googling me or checking out my other stores. Cheers!

About ShreddyStudio
-
This piece is a larger pop-art themed painting. The basic image composition is worked out in advance.
-
The image is transfered to canvas using pen and pencil as a series of cross-hatches and sealed.
-
A thin glaze of blue is added. Did I hide the work underneath? No, I celebrated it. The underdrawing adds interest.
-
Once the background is done, I build up the hand using a more painterly process in white.
-
So this image is neither entirely painting nor entirely drawing... but engaging and rich.
ShreddyStudio paintings and processes
I have a degree in Visual Communications Design from the University of Alberta and studied painting and illustration under John Freeman, Graham Peacock, Desmond Rochford, David Cantine, Robert Sinclair, Amanda McRoberts. Those studio classes were liberating.
My full-time job is as a graphic designer and I plan signage and wayfinding systems. This just means that image-making is something I have been doing daily for over thirty years. It is only natural that processes from my day-to-day work influences my paintings. That means "layers." I love to make images that allow you to see through colours to what is underneath. In some of my images you can see the underdrawing, reference marks, pencil, pen, ink work, or elements used to guide the process.
Why? Because we live in a world where everything is being replaced by ones-and-zeros. Things physical, things made by effort, things made by real people are more precious than ever. So in my paintings you may see things that are revealed with time, or underneath a colour. You might see within my paintings a grid, pencil hatching, or other things normally "buried" under opaque paint. In other words, the human process behind the image is there to be enjoyed (rather than obscurred).
I don't know why, but I have always enjoyed working with my hands. There is something joyful about peeling a potato, cooking a meal, sanding a piece of wood, restoring a piece of furniture, or making homemade jam (or homebrew). If these are sentiments you share then you inherently understand my painting process.
