5 out of 5 starsThis "Wine" scarf is strikingly beautiful, with rich plum colors offset by bold streaks of golden yellow: just a masterfully done color palette. The scarf has a cozy, substantial texture yet is very fluid and drapes easily. I really appreciate Wendi's listing the fiber content of her weavings, and the care she takes in describing (and naming!) her one-of-a-kind pieces before they go to new homes; very glad this particular scarf found a home with me! Thank you so much Wendi.

A collection of weaving at the Ptarmigan Art Gallery.
Saori weaving on an island on Canada's west coast.
I remember visiting my Great Aunt in the summertime, and she had a living room full of looms overlooking a lake in the interior of BC. We always had the chance to test out our hands at simple looms, but I remember gazing at all the textile collections that she displayed from around the world. After she could no longer weave, I was gifted with a large floor loom that her husband built for her- however as my husband and I were building a straw bale house, we had to put the loom into storage. After our house was done, my father found for me a small Saori loom, and while neither of us knew what Saori meant, it was a better size for the small house we had just moved into. A bit of research and a class with a saori weaver from the next island over got me hooked onto the freedom of creativity that came with this loose style of weaving that has only four guidelines:
Be bold and adventurous
Consider the differences between a machine and a human being
Look out through eyes that shine
Inspire and learn from one another in the group
It is often called freedom weaving, or self-discovery through free weaving. I have discovered for myself the meditative zone that comes from being immersed in colour and texture, and the ongoing experiments that result from such combinations. There is no wrong way, no mistakes, only un-intended natural beauty that no machine could duplicate. Judgements are moved aside and replaced with curiosity and kindness.
I hope you enjoy what you see, and if you acquire something, I hope it feels just as beautiful in your hands as it does in mine.
Recently I have acquired three french angora rabbits, and am currently learning to incorporate their amazingly soft fibres into my creations.

Wendi Lopatecki
Owner, Creator
I began weaving soon after my husband and I completed the building of our straw bale house in the Gulf Islands of BC in 2013. I discovered Saori weaving, and have grown to love the tranquil, creative, and endless expressions of Saori.
