About

So far So Comfy!

I started So Comfy Designs (it was actually 'Sew Comfy Designs' for a few months) as a way for me to generate a little bit of income while staying home to raise my two little boys. There wasn't much money left over for supplies, so I started out using materials I had on hand, such as my husbands old work t-shirts. In the summer of 2012 I cut my teeth on a small collection of accessories and clothing made from up cycled materials. Encouraged by great feedback and the absolute joy I rediscovered from designing, I headed to my local business development centre and learned to write a business plan.

At that time I had no idea how to start a business. I didn't understand marketing, or how to cost materials, or grow a brand, or honestly even how to sew bags. These all came with practice, research, and pure perseverance. Hours spent designing, and sewing, and taking bags apart to reuse materials gave me more than enough 'schooling' and after years of refining I can honestly say my bags are the best they've ever been.

I truly enjoy every part of running So Comfy Designs; the thrill of discovering a leather jacket that is dated beyond repair but has leather that will live on; researching and shopping for sustainable fabrics and imagining how I can make a better bag will always keep striving for more; and most importantly, connecting with fine customers who are excited to own a bag that comes with a story, and is beautifully made for them.

The most impactful part of this whole experience has been growing So Comfy while growing my family. It certainly wasn't easy, as nurturing a business, like nurturing children, is very demanding emotionally, and physically, but, I've come to realize, can be just as rewarding.

You can expect the So Comfy brand to grow and evolve with new and favourite styles. I'll continue to be inspired by current trends and classic ideas, and come up with clever ways to improve my bag collections. New materials and colours will come and go, however, every leather bottom bag will be 100% upcycled leather.
So Comfy Designs truly is a manifestation of the dreams I had as a child to be a fashion designer, and I hope inspires others to look at the items we already own with a fresh perspective, and instead of eliminate, create!

Around 2017 I came to the realization that maybe this little business should stay little so that I can focus on my core values and always create a superior product. I learned that keeping So Comfy Designs small actually gives me the most freedom!

And truly does give me the opportunity to do a little happy dance ever time someone buys a So Comfy Bag.

When I'm not sewing I love to spend time with my favourites; my husband, two growing sons, and the best fur baby any mama could have.

MATERIALS

The collection of bags you see on this shop are handcrafted from remnant fabrics and up cycled leather. Linings, zippers, and hardware are all high quality and finish each bag off beautifully. Every piece is designed and handmade by a dedicated designer-maker in a home studio.

Every leather bottom began life as a jacket. Sometimes a couch, but mostly leather clothing that I hunt down. It's been worn and loved to perfection, and will carry on adding durability and eco-style to your bag for a long, long time to come.

The beautiful fabrics are mostly screen printed cotton and are treated during their manufacturing to repel stains. Expect some fading from these fabrics with wear, but they should keep their beauty and shape.

Within the soft walls of each bag is a layer of fleece for stability and durability.

Every brass or nickel zipper is hand cut and assembled for each order.

CUSTOM ORDERS

Custom orders are always welcome. Whether it's your unused leather jacket, or one that belonged to a really important person in your life, bags can be custom created to your specification. Options to include specialized fabric are always on the table, but most often the bags include the original jacket lining and zippers when they are in great shape. Prices are based on the time it takes for each job, and materials used. Since it's your leather jacket, you provide some of the materials, but studio time and sewing supplies are always added in. Expect a 4-6 week production period as well. BTW, jackets can be mailed (at your expense) and shipped back. Contact for more information.

DESIGNER WARRANTY

Each bag is handmade by my hands, from my designs, using the best materials at my disposal. They are tried and tested, and built to last. I am beyond proud of every bag that leaves my studio and you can expect it to serve you well for a long time. Therefore I stand behind my work and will repair any structural damages that could appear in the first year of use. Should you require this warrantee, send me a convo and I'll get back to you within 24 hours.
