¡Hola y Taigüey da Boriké, Porto Rico!

Daka Taino. I miei anziani mi hanno chiamato "Il mare che conosce se stesso". Sono un artigiano culturale certificato nell'arcipelago di Porto Rico. Ogni pezzo è realizzato in relazione e con il permesso dell'oceano e delle creature che hanno creato queste bellissime conchiglie. Sono così grata per ogni acquisto, mi piace o preferisco e sono felice di essere qui. Lasciate che vi racconti un po' del mio viaggio.

Di professione, sono uno scrittore e un narratore, ma questi campi richiedevano anni davanti a uno schermo di computer, lontano dalle terre ancestrali e nelle biblioteche del New England. Da adulto ho preso la decisione di rimatricolarmi nell'arcipelago di Porto Rico e di ritrovare le mie radici, che mi hanno riportato al mare, al surf e alla terra.

Nel 2023 ho avuto un'esperienza di pre-morte durante una grave infezione da COVID. Mi ci sono voluti 11 mesi per recuperare le forze. Un giorno sono andato a fare una passeggiata con il mio cane quando ero scoraggiato e ho chiesto all'oceano: "Cosa faccio adesso?". Pochi giorni dopo avevo trovato la più incredibile e rara pila di conchiglie a Rincón dopo una tempesta tropicale.

Ho portato queste conchiglie a casa e mi sono ricordata delle parole di una donna medicina con cui avevo lavorato una volta in California/Messico che diceva: "I tuoi doni sono fatti per essere condivisi", e mentre osservavo la mia crescente collezione di conchiglie ho potuto sentire la domanda: "Condividerai il tuo dono?" sorgere nella mia consapevolezza.

Fu in questo momento che nacque Spirit Shells, un modo non solo per condividere la bellezza ma anche le qualità protettive delle conchiglie. La prima collezione di Spirit Shells è stata lanciata a giugno 2024. È difficile esprimere a parole quanta preparazione e intenzione siano dietro questi pezzi che metto in vendita. Questo perché Spirit Shells non è solo design ma un rapporto vivo con la natura.

Daka Taino. My elders named me, “The Sea that Knows Itself.” I am a certified cultural artisan in the archipelago of Puerto Rico. Each piece is made in relationship and with permission from the ocean and creatures that created these beautiful shells. I am so grateful to each purchase, like or favorite and happy to be here. Let me tell you a bit about my journey.

By trade, I am a writer and storyteller yet these fields required years at a computer screen far from ancestral lands and in New England libraries. I made the decision as an adult to rematriate to the archipelago of Puerto Rico and find my roots which led me back to the sea, surf, and land.

In 2023 I had a near death experience during a severe C0VID infection. It took me 11 months to recover my strength. One day I went for a walk with my dog when I was discouraged and asked the ocean, “What do I do now?” A few days later I had found the most incredible and rare pile of shells in Rincón after a tropical storm.

I took these shells home and remembered the words of a medicine woman I had once worked with in California/Mexico who said, “Your gifts are meant to be shared,” and while staring at my growing shell collection I could feel the question, “Are you going to share your gift?” rise in my awareness.

It was in this moment Spirit Shells was born as a way to not only share beauty but also the protective qualities of shells. The first collection of Spirit Shells launched in June 2024. It is hard to convey in text how much prep and intention goes into these pieces I post for sale. That is because Spirit Shells is not only design but a living relationship to nature.
