Mia figlia ed io preghiamo insieme ogni mattina e ogni sera, e studiamo la Bibbia insieme. Conosce la Bibbia in modo straordinario. Avrei voluto farle una predica. Sono un papà; è la mia impostazione predefinita. Invece sono tornato a casa e ho iniziato a scriverle una storia, su una ragazza di nome Millie, una nuova amica di nome Grace, incredibilmente gentile, che si rifiuta di arrendersi con lei non importa quante volte venga allontanata, e una piccola moneta d'argento con SÌ da una parte e NO dall'altra. L'ho scritta sperando che, da qualche parte in quella storia, potesse intravedere quanto profondamente sia amata e che ciò che già sapeva nella sua testa finalmente raggiungesse il suo cuore. Chi sia veramente Grace, lo lascio scoprire a ogni lettore. Mia figlia lo sa.

Una volta terminato il libro, io e lei abbiamo deciso che la moneta non doveva rimanere un'invenzione. My daughter and I pray together every morning and every night, and we do Bible studies together. She knows her Bible remarkably well. But it's on our evening walks that she really opens up, and on one of those walks she told me something that stopped me in my tracks. Intellectually, she said, she's all there. She was just missing the connection in her heart.

I wanted to lecture. I'm a dad; it's the factory setting. Instead I went home and started writing her a story, about a girl named Millie, a relentlessly kind new friend named Grace who refuses to give up on her no matter how many times she's pushed away, and a small silver coin with YES on one side and NO on the other. I wrote it hoping that somewhere in that story she would catch a glimpse of how deeply she is loved, and that what she already knew in her head would finally make the trip to her heart. Who Grace really is, I leave for every reader to discover. My daughter knows.

When the book was finished, she and I decided the coin shouldn't stay fictional.
