About

Metal and fibres… my two main artsy loves...

Metal
The first time I got to work with metal was when I was in grade 8. I had to take metalwork class, and for the most part it was great! The first time I got to cut and shape a piece of heavy gauge copper into a concave circle, I was in love. Making a hinged box with thousands (slight exaggeration) of measurements? Not in love. I still have both, though. I look at the box and wonder how I ever managed to finish it… my metal enjoyment these days does not lend itself to precision cuts – I love the odd and organic shapes of the 60’s and 70’s, and those tend to influence me as I work.

I always say that I have just enough knowledge to put things together, and not enough to know when I’m working in odd or untraditionals way. I have taken a beginner silversmithing class through a community education/recreation centre program, but everything else I’ve learned has been through trial and error. I do not tend to take on many commissions as I work quite intuitively and can rarely predict what something will look like when I’m finished.

One of the things that gave me a push to start making my own jewellery was the lack of jewellery that either fit me or was appropriately scaled. I am a large woman with large hands, and I was constantly getting rings sized up, feeling very weary of tiny little pendants that were visually lost on me, and never wearing bracelets because nothing fit properly. If you have requirements like these (or the opposite issues), but nothing in the shop seems to work for you, convo me, and we’ll see what we can come up with. As I previously mentioned, I don’t do a lot of commissions, but sometimes existing pieces can be tweaked to make them work, and I’m always happy to work with people to find something that brings them joy.

Fibres
I became interested in fibre arts a several years ago. I love the colours and textures of yarn, but found that I did not have the patience or ability to follow patterns for knitting and crochet. I was lucky enough to be introduced to needle felting and I love it! All of the beautiful fibres, none of the patterns - it’s like it was made for me. I mainly create wall hangings, but have recently branched out into 3D objects, teaching beginner workshops at the downtown local yarn store (the gorgeous Beehive Wool Shop in Victoria, BC).

Thank you so much for visiting my shop! Please let me know if you have any questions

I have a background in visual arts, and have worked in community theatre, usually dealing with costuming. I love jewellery and fibres, and I'm so pleased to work with both. I live in Victoria, British Columbia - an area full of natural inspiration.
