Oscillations between History, Landscape and the Spaces In-between

TODD TREMEER is a Canadian artist living in Bowmanville, Ontario, Canada. Oil painting and watercolor painting are his favorite mediums for plein air landscape painting outdoors. As a printmaker, drypoint etching and other intaglio printmaking processes occupy much of his time.
Todd Tremeer exhibits major artworks nationally and internationally. His several major grants and painting prizes include: Canada Council for the Arts & Ontario Arts Council grants; the 'Joseph Plaskett' Prize for Canadian Painting in 2007. Also, three time winner: 'Best Watercolorist' Toronto Outdoor Art Festival 2009, 2010, 2011.

'My art oscillates between history and landscape themes. Close observation of my subject--be it plein air painting outdoors or painting from miniature models -- close observation is an important element in my work.'

Frequently asked questions

Shipping Insurance / Shipping Protection

As the vendor/artist I pay your shipping costs and buy insurance for lost packages in the mail. Artwork is shipped in non-bendable waterproof packaging. Art is shipped using Canada Post. Large paintings or artworks valued above $1000 are likely to be shipped using Purolator or UPS.

Picture Framing

I build most of my own picture frames. I use quality hardwoods and acid free matboard and mounting tape. If purchasing one of my unframed artworks I can often frame your artwork. Custom framing may delay shipping by 7-14 days. Sometimes I can unframe an artwork and sell it at a slight discount. Etching and linocut prints are usually available in my art studio for sale both framed and unframed.
9x12 and 8x10 inch panels are my favorite painting size. I can sometimes switch paintings and frames if you prefer a different shade of hardwood.

Do you teach art classes?

Yes. I teach adult, teen and children's drawing, painting and printmaking classes. If you live in the Durham Region/Clarington area contact me for more details.
** Currently I'm teaching at 'A Gift of Art' in Newcastle Ontario.

Paintings of Italy, France and England?

I studied painting for a year in Florence Italy and for several years traveled regularly to Sicily where I painted many small watercolors and oil paintings.

The Joseph Plaskett prize for Canadian painting (2007) funded two extended painting trips to England and France. There I painted many landscapes, historical and military museum themed artworks.

I have family living in France and have the opportunity to visit and make paintings in France every summer.
See my European views and some museum paintings on my Etsy gallery. Visit my website to see most of my military history paintings.

Where can we see your artworks in person?

'State of the Art Gallery' and 'Art Interiors' are two Toronto galleries selling my artworks. They have many artworks similar to those on Etsy plus many larger paintings by me. Drop in and visit these galleries in person or visit them online.

Where do you go to paint landscapes?

I take 2 or 3 painting trips a year spanning several days each. Painting trips take me to Provincial Parks such as Algonquin, Killarney or Bon Echo. I also make a lot of my paintings in cottage country and on crown land in Ontario. Canoe-camping painting trips involve lots of portaging, paddling and hiking. This kind of painting in the forest means painting 'en plein air' on small wood panels.

Closer to home, I make daily paintings in and around my community of Bowmanville.

Are paintings on your website for sale?

Yes most paintings on my website are for sale however some are already sold into private collections. I keep these major paintings on my website so other people can best see what I do. I don't post everything to Etsy. In fact my Etsy gallery and the website generally has different work. If you see something on my website, message me and I can sell it through Etsy.

Why toy soldier, military and dollhouse paintings?

I collect toy soldiers and prefer to draw and paint from direct observation of the subject, thus I paint plein-air and draw still life diorama views using miniature figures and dollhouse miniatures.

At university I studied history and my masters thesis work explored 'military history and the popular imagination.' I was also a soldier in the Canadian army reserves some years ago.

What are you creating in the studio now?

Just finished designing and building myself an etching press. I'm busy with lots of woodworking art projects, some printmaking on the new press and am always oil painting.

For the past 3-4 years I've been researching and making my own handmade traditional oil paint from pigments and hand-refined linseed oils. These homemade paints are used in many of my toy soldier and dollhouse paintings. Find them described as tempera grassa or egg oil tempera paintings.

Do you sell large paintings and large framed prints on paper?

Yes, I have several large paintings for sale. Preview large oil on canvas paintings on my website, Message me and I'll post the artwork to sell on Etsy.
I also sell large framed etchings, color linocuts and oil painting directly through my art studio in Bowmanville. I'm likely to deliver large artworks in person if customers live in Ontario. I have many large artworks available in my studio too large to easily ship by mail. Email me to learn more.
