A passion for fibres and shared disdain for the ordinary drew Laura Twiss and Tonia Weber together over a decade ago. As their friendship blossomed in tandem with their mutual love of knitting, the two realized that they also had in common a feisty spirit that inspired them to want to shake things up in the Ottawa fashion scene and thus, Twiss & Weber was born.

Tonia had been busy capitalizing on her design background, having studied at Ottawa’s Richard Robinson Academy of Fashion design after relocating to the nation’s capital from Edmonton after high school. She had created airline, a successful line of clothing popular among the rave culture set across Canada and then stepped away to raise her family. Her next phase including making felted accessories, managing the popular Ottawa yarn shop wabi sabi and knitting amazing sculptural pieces including gorgeous sweaters created in a unique, freeform way. Laura, who lived in northern Ontario until moving to Ottawa in her teens, studied fashion design at Montreal’s LaSalle College and worked for a variety of fashion companies including Club Monaco and Muriel Dombret. When she and Tonia opted to join forces in 2008, Laura’s role was to capably translate Tonia’s creations into patterns – a process that was both humbling and challenging but ultimately very successful – thereby forming the basis of their first retail endeavour.

While the duo was generating passive income from their knitting patterns, their desire to work on apparel resurfaced and they recognized they shared very complementary strengths. Laura loves talking with people and writing, making patterns that perform beautifully, setting in sleeves and fine finishing details. Tonia is passionate about perfectly-fitted pants, making things quickly and dealing with numbers. The two launched a little workshop in Hintonburg and fashion-savvy women promptly took note.

A four day pop-up shop in a vacant Wellington West storefront in March of 2013 cemented their belief that there was a healthy appetite for well-made Canadian clothing. Soon after, the pair took the leap and rented out a light-filled storefront just down the road, putting down roots in one of Ottawa’s most vibrant fashion districts. What was intended to be a three month trial was so successful that the Twiss & Weber boutique is now in its sixth year!

Part of the appeal of the Wellington West community lies in the fact that it’s equidistant to and within walking distance of both women’s homes. More importantly, it’s an area where a number of strong and supportive female business owners have chosen to locate, many of whom agree that there is a great synergy to having several complementary shops within just a few blocks, making the area a fashion mecca.

Taking pages from both life and work experience, Twiss & Weber was conceived as a place where the emphasis would be on positivity. Eager to share skills, staff and knowledge, both women gladly help young designers looking for guidance. There is a quietly forceful theory in play at Twiss & Weber, dubbed the ‘girl gang’. Simply put, it means accepting women’s decisions at any point in their lives without judgement and moving on. This uplifting, shame-free ethos infuses every action and interaction and Twiss & Weber.

After more than five years of running their successful boutique, what still brings Tonia and Laura joy is the continuum of planning, executing and seeing customers respond to pieces. There is also the opportunity for constant learning and improvement as there are always new fabrics and new sewing techniques to explore. Both would tell you not to doubt for one second that it takes a lot of really hard work to run your own business but the payoff for these talented women is the excitement of creating a piece then watching someone try it on and fall in love with it.

As Laura says, “We like to tell people we empower women through beautiful garments designed, produced, and sold in-house by talented, caring people. We serve a broad need and it is absolutely thrilling to have young women and their grandmothers come in together to shop at our boutique. We are so proud to offer people quality, Canadian-made garments and to see them being worn with joy. We invited you to journey along with us as we share the details of our story in this new chapter on the Twiss & Weber blog.”

About

- a line of stylish & affordable clothes - made on site - for real women - with history -

Our Story
We listen, we collaborate and we create.

Over the course of the past 8 years, Tonia and Laura have developed the Twiss and Weber label from a small operation of felting, knitting and dyeing, into an independently standing boutique and studio dedicated to creating clothing that matters. Our ethos is to have women feel confident in our clothes through deliberate lines, quality sewing, and the best fabrics available.

At Twiss & Weber, the focus of our design is to achieve a proper fit for as many body types in as many styles as we can. As a team, we talk through each design, test them on ourselves, and ask for opinions on fit & fabric from a variety of different women. This inspired our customization service – we wanted to deliver a service that gives women the ability to dress themselves in clothes that made them feel authentic & fantastic. We make customization accessible, relaxed and affordable.

Our Collection

Our clothing is widely influenced by the amazing women we have met & surround ourselves with. They are living hectic lives and we try to create clothes that make it easier for them to get dressed in the morning. Each piece is designed with the entirety of the collection in mind – intended to provide multiple outfits from a minimalist wardrobe. Together they can be interchanged and transitioned to meet your everyday wardrobe needs.
