About

You have stepped into Two Carrots Studio

I'm Carrie, the metalsmith behind Two Carrots Studio. I would like to take a moment to introduce myself, and let you know a little bit about what makes me tick. Thanks for stopping by!

WHO AM I?
I am a metalsmith, artist, gardener and creative soul. I say metalsmithing rather than silversmithing, because they are quite different! True silversmithing is all about making vessels and utensil pieces, not jewelry. Goldsmithing techniques are used for jewelry making, whether the medium is gold, silver, platinum, copper.

What I do is closer to goldsmithing, but because I work in silver, copper, bronze, aluminum, brass and a little bit of gold, I feel that metalsmithing is a more appropriate title! I don’t just make jewelry – I love larger scale projects as well and have sketches and rough shapes ready to go for a rain chain, and some copper pipe just waiting to be made into a fantastic wind chime.

For a peek behind the scenes, follow me on Instagram (@twocarrotsstudio). You will see works in progress along with some finished pieces. I love the creative process, and it's fun to share how I take raw materials like sheet and wire and turn them into something beautiful. You get to see how metal sometimes gets really, really ugly before it gets pretty.

I have learned so much from my fantastic local teachers, and from the large online community of 'smiths that are eager to share their skills, techniques and tutorials. I am always in awe at the generosity of the maker community and pay that generosity forward whenever I can.

MORE ABOUT ME:

I am lucky to be the mom of two feisty, creative and fun girls. Mr Two Carrots is completely outnumbered, especially since we added a black Labrador to the mix! Audrey is quite the dog, and on her way to becoming a Very Good Girl. Someday...Labs take a while to get their brains. My girls are my world, and I truly can't remember what life was like without them. Well, I do remember my house being cleaner...

I am a total word nerd and love a good pun. (And a bad one too.) I love to read into the wee hours of the morning, which happens often enough, probably due to my caffeine addiction. I love a great cup of coffee, and have no shame in admitting how much I love the bean. I have a pretty perennial garden that I totter in when I'm not in the studio. Unfortunately Miss Audrey has been undoing all of my gardening work over the winter, so this spring will be interesting! I kill houseplants with reckless abandon, but have discovered that I cannot kill succulents. These now adorn my garden window in my kitchen. I enjoy construction, and have worked with my dad to build decks, fences, gates and other projects around my house and at the cabin. Metalsmithing is just construction on a much smaller scale.

WHO DO I DESIGN FOR?

First and foremost, myself. I prefer to wear simple, classic pieces , and keep that in mind when I am working on a new design. Keeping the shapes clean and simple, I make pieces with subtle details that will bring a smile to your face. You'll find this in the whimsy of a dancing rat on a copper cuff, a sweet little bird cutout on the back of a pendant, or a row of stick flowers dancing along the edge of a silver bracelet. No one else will have the same piece as you. This will be the jewelry you reach for every day.

Secondly, I design pieces with my customer in mind. Is it wearable? How does the cuff feel on the wrist? Do the earrings feel like they are barely there? Where will the pendant hang when it is on? Is the chain easy to fasten? When I create a new design, you will see me wearing it so I can answer all of these questions and adjust accordingly. Of course, this means that sometimes I can't let go of a special new piece because I have fallen in love with it!

WHAT INSPIRES ME?

Artists draw inspiration from everything around them. I love architecture, mid century modern furniture, anything Art Deco and Art Nouveau. As an introvert, I need space for quiet reflection. My garden is my refuge when I'm not in the studio, and our family is lucky to have a waterfront cabin property that is a home away from home. I am able to read, nap, sketch, listen to music or enjoy the gorgeous symphony of singing birds, crashing waves and rustling leaves. This quiet reflection recharges me, and keeps my creativity flowing.

WHY THE STICKS?

The Stick Flower series was inspired by the simple but bold drawing style of my fearless 5 year old artist. Children's art is made with such confidence and without ego - they draw what they see and it is beautiful. There is an elegant simplicity to their drawing, and I hope that I have captured that in those pieces.

Shop policies

Last updated on 09 February, 2018
All of my items are handcrafted in my little home studio.

With the exception of fine chains and some clasps, I construct all the components of each piece from raw materials: silver sheet, wire and casting grains, copper sheet and wire.

Every piece represents hours of work, and comes from the heart. One of the hardest things I do as an artist, is let a piece go out into the world. Wear it, love it, and thank you for supporting my shop!

Please use the coupon code LOCALPICKUP when you place your order and I will make arrangements with you to receive your item.

US AND CANADIAN CUSTOMERS:

In-stock orders will be shipped within 3-5 business days. Canadian orders usually take a week to arrive, while US shipments may take up to two weeks to arrive. During major holidays these times may be extended - please see Canada Post and USPS websites for holiday shipping guidelines. Delays due to holidays, weather or customs are beyond my control.

MY ORDER HASN’T ARRIVED! WHY IS THIS HAPPENING?

Ah, the postal service. All of my orders are shipped with tracking unless otherwise specified, and a tracking number will be provided to you. Canada Post and USPS have handy apps that will allow you to track your packages and provide updates if you subscribe for them. Postal delivery times can vary based on the time of the year, customs holds, the weather, or the phases of the moon.

Kidding aside, once the item is in the hands of the post office, it is out of my control. I will do my best to obtain accurate information on shipping timelines, and will assist you in tracking a late or lost package. Lost or missing packages are rare, but things do happen.

I NEED THIS QUICKLY! CAN YOU RUSH SHIP AN ITEM FOR DELIVERY ON A CERTAIN DATE?

Yes and no. YES I can rush ship; I will hold an item for you and get expedited shipping rates and timelines. NO, I cannot guarantee an exact date. The items are still subject to the same conditions as regular tracked packages - customs, weather and seasonal volume will affect delivery time and are beyond my control. Please plan your purchases accordingly to avoid disappointment, should an item be delayed in transit.

CUSTOMS AND DUTIES:

Please note that all applicable taxes and Customs or Duty fees are the responsibility of the buyer.

Two Carrots is not responsible for any delays in projected shipping time due to Customs processing, as this is beyond my control.

CUSTOM AND MADE TO ORDER ITEMS:

Please add 5-7 business days in addition to normal lead times for any made-to-order stock items. Custom order timelines will be discussed as we create your order together.
Additional policies and FAQs
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

WHAT ARE YOUR PIECES MADE OF?

I primarily work in sterling silver and copper. I incorporate other materials into my work, including brass, bronze, aluminum, and leather and semiprecious gemstones.

WHERE IS THE 925 STAMP? HOW DO I KNOW YOUR METAL IS SILVER?

You will see your piece stamped or tagged with my trademark stamp, but not metal purity. (925 silver or K stamped for gold)

In accordance with the Canadian Precious Metals Marking Act, a quality stamp for precious metals may only be used in conjunction with the maker’s registered trademark stamp. At this time, Two Carrots Studio does not have a registered trademark, so I am not allowed to stamp for quality.

I assure you that the metals I use are exactly as described. I purchase my silver directly from the refiner, and my other metals come from a trusted commercial supplier.

I AM NICKEL SENSITIVE. ARE YOUR PIECES NICKEL FREE?

Yes, they are nickel free. Sterling silver is an alloy of 92.5 parts silver and 7.5 parts copper. Brass and bronze are also alloys, but do not contain nickel.

ARE THE SNAPS ON LEATHER CUFFS NICKEL FREE?

Yes, I use nickel free snaps from a reputable supplier.

CAN I WEAR MY PIECES IN THE SHOWER? THE POOL?

It is best to remove pieces when swimming or bathing, as chemicals in the water, along with any products used, can discolour the metal. Gemstone pieces should not be immersed.

WHAT ABOUT WASHING MY HANDS? CAN I LEAVE MY RINGS ON?

Make it a best practice to remove rings before washing or applying lotion. Soap and lotions can accumulate in the small nooks and crannies of your jewelry and cause discolouration to the jewelry and possible irritation to your skin.

MY PIECE HAS TURNED BLACK! WHAT IS WRONG WITH IT?

It’s just a little tarnish - don’t worry! The more silver jewelry is worn, the less likely it is to tarnish. Chemical reactions can cause discolouration too. Give the piece a gentle polish with the polishing cloth provided with your order and it will be as good as new. A care card has also been included with your piece. Tuck it into your jewelry box right now!

I JUST NOTICED MY ORDER HAD AN OLD ADDRESS! HOW CAN I FIX THIS?

Whoops! We are human, and miss things. If your order has not shipped, this is an easy fix. Send me a message and I’ll make sure I send it to the right place. Please update your Etsy profile to have the correct address. If the order has shipped, this gets tricky. USPS has an online service that will allow you to redirect your mail, and Canada Post has a similar feature. Please refer to their websites for the procedure and fees associated with this.

If the item goes to your old address and isn’t forwarded, it will have to make it’s way back to me and then I will reship, at your cost.

MY ORDER ARRIVED DAMAGED! WHAT SHOULD I DO?

Oh no! I am sorry that this happened. Your order left my studio complete and very well packaged, but sometimes things happen. Thankfully, it is rare but it can happen. If there shipping damage, please take a picture of the packaging and KEEP the packaging in case it is needed for a claim. If the packaging is damaged but your item is fine, we are golden. If the item inside is also damaged, please take photos and we will work together to resolve it.

MY ITEM IS NOT WHAT I ORDERED. WHAT CAN I DO?

Most of my items are one of a kind, or made to order. If you feel the item is not what you thought it would be, send me a conversation and we will work together to resolve it.

I WANT TO CANCEL MY ORDER. HOW CAN I DO THIS?

First, send me a message. If your order has not shipped we can process a refund. If it has shipped, you will need to wait for it to arrive and then send it back to me. You will be responsible for return postage. Once the package has reached me, I will be able to process a refund. Please note that made to order and custom orders are non-refundable.

Frequently asked questions

Care instructions

COPPER

All copper pieces have been sealed and finished with museum grade Renaissance Wax. This will prevent the piece from tarnishing, but is not a permanent finish. How long the finish lasts will depend on how often the piece is worn, and the body chemistry of the person wearing it. If the piece starts to discolour, a small amount of paste wax applied and buffed to a shine should do the trick.

SILVER

Worn frequently, silver should not tarnish. If tarnish does appear, a quick polish with a jewelry cloth will bring it back to a lustrous finish.

Gift wrapping and packaging

All pieces can be gift wrapped - select this option at checkout. If you would like a special message included with the piece, please let me know and I will add that extra touch for you.

Sizing details

If you need a specific size for an item, I am happy to create a made-to-order version of any of my pieces.

Bracelets and cuffs listed are made to fit the average wearer.

For custom or made-to-order items, I may ask for both ring size, and size in mm to ensure the most accurate fit.

Wholesale availability

I am open to wholesale orders. Please contact me for product line information.

Custom and personalised orders

I love custom orders! I usually have a few custom pieces on the bench, and would be happy to create something special for you.
