Beautiful books created out of a desire to help others

Diagnosed with severe Endometriosis, a painful and chronic disease, I couldn't work a “normal” job and had a lot of time on my hands. I was determined that I could still do something to help others. In 2012 I started “We Are Bound Together”, which combined my love of art and book making with that desire to help and contribute to a better world. I have always been into visual arts, since my earliest memories. Always being independent and somewhat stubborn, I am self taught in most of my artistic endeavours, and a perfectionist. I love colour and texture and each day brings new excitement when I look forward to what I can create.

I've never had any formal schooling in bookbinding, not even in art (unless you count high school). But I've always been artsy and can usually figure it out if I need to. So I learned the craft and art of bookbinding on my own.

I especially love working with the soft leather. The way it feels, the way it smells, it's so pleasing. All the papers I use for my leather journals are artist quality, an important quality that keeps the pages, and anything you add to the pages, from yellowing.

I also make books with recycled floppy disks as well as RFID blocking credit card sleeves. With today's current technologies we have to change the way we protect ourselves from theft.

All the proceeds from my shop go to support my passion - those who are being persecuted for their faith in Jesus. By persecuted, I refer to those in danger for their lives, health, etc. People who have lost so much for their faith. Organizations to whom the proceeds are donated to are Voice of the Martyrs and Open Doors.

By doing something that I love, I am now enabled to do something for those I love.

Ever since I can remember I've been artsy. If it was something I could do with my hands - I enjoyed it. Anything from baking, gardening, painting, playing the piano and of-course bookbinding.

Frequently asked questions

Do you do custom work?

I gladly accept custom work similar to the styles you see in my shop. Such customizations may include colour of leather or thread, size of the book or number of pages.

Feel free to contact me if you require something more specific. Keep in mind that custom orders take longer to prepare. Please leave at least 2 weeks for production, depending on the size and quantity of the project. Large quantities may take longer.

Please refer to shop listings for items that are already customizable.

Are your books refillable?

At this time I do not make refillable journals/sketchbooks as my binding technique does not lend itself to that. The decorative stitching on the spine of the book is also functional, it is what holds the book together. Each stitch would need to be cut and the new pages sewn back in.

Can you add a title page?

You have your choice of printed (www.etsy.com/ca/listing/253600967) or hand painted (www.etsy.com/ca/listing/253594705) title pages. Please keep in mind that this will add extra time to your book production and I need to be in contact with you for finalization on proofs. These can only be added to custom journals. Please see listings for more details.

Can you add my initials to the cover?

Adding initials to leather takes certain tools and techniques and only on certain types of leather. At this time I cannot offer this service.

A title page is a great way to add a personal touch to any custom journal, and is not as limiting as engraving/burning. Please see previous questions for more details.

I need this order by a certain date! Can you expedite the shipping?

***Note*** Due to covid-19, delivery Canada post no longer guarantees it's shipping estimates***XpressPost may arrive faster than regular post, but it still may not be within the expected time frame.***

Most of my listings include options for upgraded shipping. These include tracked and XpressPost options. XpressPost, although expensive, is the only one with guaranteed delivery times. I do not do next day delivery. The charges are based on Canada Post's rates and are for the shipping costs only.

This is a gift for someone. Can you wrap it nicely and include a note?

All my books are wrapped in brown kraft paper and tied up with ribbon because it's fun getting gifts, even if it's for yourself. On a number of occasions I have included notes to the recipient from the purchaser. This is no problem to send a few lines and is at no extra cost. If you would like to include such a note please include what you want to say in the "note to seller" when purchasing from my Etsy shop.

What is the difference in paper weights?

My blank journals come in two different paper weights, 70lb and 98lb. The 70lb weight is great for sketching, drawing, and writing. The 98lb paper is quite thick and in addition to sketching, is also great for light water media work (watercolour, ink, acrylic, etc). The 98lb paper is also much more sturdy and is an excellent weight for adding pictures, ticket stubs and other memorability to it. Both are acid free and archival.

70lb weight can be found here: https://www.etsy.com/ca/shop/WeAreBoundTogether?ref=1549470§ion_id=11549470

98lb weight can be found here: https://www.etsy.com/ca/shop/WeAreBoundTogether?ref=1549470§ion_id=19017612

Why do you need a phone number for the XpressPost Shipping upgrade?

I am very sorry to have to request such personal information as a phone number. This is a requirement of Canada Post and will only be used for the XpressPost shipping upgrade.

The phone number of the recipient is required by Canada Post. It will help with any customs delay issues.

If a phone number is not provided, the on time guarantee will be void.

I like your books but want a different size.

The sizes of journals which I make are located in the "sections" tabs in my shop.

They include:
4"x6" available in 70lb sketch paper
5.5" x 7" available in 70lb sketch, 98lb mix media or lined pages
6"x9" 140lb watercolour paper
8"x10" 70lb sketch paper

It may be possible to make a journal slightly smaller than the ones listed above, however the 8" x 10" is the largest I can do at this time.
