The process of making a pottery mug

A lot of people often asked me how I can turn a block of a clay into a beautiful drinkable mug. Let me tell you a little bit about the process. First, I have to wedge the block of clay to make sure there is no air bubbles just like how your mom would kneel a cookie dough. Then, I shape it into a ball and placed it in the middle of the pottery wheel. Once the wheel starts to turn, I center the clay by coning it up and down (pusing the clay up and down) with my bare hands. When it is centered, I open up a hole in the middle and then compress the bottom to make sure there is no cracks. Then, I have to recenter again and pull the wall up to the desired height. When I am satisfied, I can cut the cylinder from the wheel and place it carefully on a dry wooden bat. The drying process takes about a week. Once it's dry, I place the cylinder back on the pottery wheel upside down and trim the foot of the mug. You can view my trimming video below :) Once trimming is done, I can sign my name on the bottom and put it in the kiln (pottery oven) and bake it in high temperature. When the firing is done, I can paint it with glazes and then put it in the kiln again for another firing. Once the second firing is done, I have to sand the foot of the mug down so it is not too sharp. Viola! The mug is ready for drinking.

Frequently asked questions

Custom and personalised orders

Yes I do custom orders. Customers usually ask me add names to cups, bowls, plates, etc. I also make custom animal plates for your pet or your favorite animal. Please contact me for details.

Care instructions

100% microwave, food, freezer, and dishwasher safe, but I strongly recommend hand washing. The glaze is 100% non-toxic, lead-free, and food safe.

Sizing details

Please refer to each listing for product size.

Gift wrapping and packaging

In efforts to conserve natures resources, I always utilize recycled packaging material ( i.E. Recycle boxes and bubble wrap). All the pottery items come bubble wrapped and sometimes stuffed with packaging peanuts to prevent damage!
