Pretty plates, still hot, coming out of the kiln.
Inspired by nature, my work is ever growing with new paintings, as well as a brand new line of pottery, FLORA & FAUNA.
As a potter and painter I have long admired forms in nature, which has translated into my work in various ways. My most recent pottery line, Flora & Fauna, uses scientific illustrations to delve into the world of biology and anatomy, with images of everything from sea creatures, to insects, to a biological heart. Flora & Fauna began years ago when I stumbled upon the beautiful illustrations of Ernst Haeckel and knew I had to incorporate them into my work. Ernst Haeckel (16 February 1834 – 9 August 1919) was a German biologist, naturalist, philosopher, physician, professor, and artist who discovered, described and named thousands of new species, mapped a genealogical tree relating all life forms, and coined many terms in biology.
After some experimenting, I devised a way to add the images to wheel-thrown stoneware pieces using a printer and decal transfer process. Each piece is thrown using a white stoneware clay, fired and glazed to cone6. Vessel interiors are a variegated blue like the depths and layers of the sea, which contrast beautifully with the pale white and sea-foam green exteriors.
My functional work calls on you to contemplate the intersection of science and art while sipping from an octopus mug. I aim to inspire the user to marvel at the beauty, mystery, symmetry and strangeness of the natural world.
A note regarding past work...
I am currently very busy raising children and only in the studio part time. Most of my work sells locally before making it onto my Etsy site. So, if there is something you saw that is no longer listed, don't hesitate to send me a message and I may be able to keep it aside or make it for you! I'm currently sold out of Dimpled Creatures but more to come soon...
About the dimpled creatures...
DIMPLED CREATURES! They are based on my imaginings of unknown creatures, and pretty little shiny things, like gemstones nestled into a rough rock. Each piece is made of stoneware ceramic, glazed with my own glazes, and oxidation fired. As I progress with this line of functional work, I will be adding more types of forms, but am currently focused on mugs, teacups, teapots and a couple bowls.
I have also been making cremation vessels, which I have a few examples displayed here. If you are interested in learning more about these urns or seeing more examples, please visit www.ElementerraUrns.com
