About

Home Decor with History

Welcome to Heather Down Designs. My name is Stacy. I create home decor with history. My pieces include rustic reclaimed barn board and farm fresh, upcycled materials.

After I left home to attend university, I have always lived at least 4 hours away from where I grew up. Many long trips back always included a little sign along the way marking "Heather Down Road". I've always loved the name of that road and over the years it has come to signify to me that I am on my way back to my family.

I grew up in northern Alberta on a little farm that raised hay, cattle, and horses. We lived next to two eccentric brothers named Danny and Alfred who lived their whole lives on their land. Besides farming they were, possibly, the ultimate recyclers and upcyclers, decades before it became a "thing". Rather than throw anything away, they milled their own lumber and built outbuilding after outbuilding to store their treasures. People would bring them stuff and they reinvented these items too and reused them. Eventually, my parents bought the land and helped take care of Danny after he lost his brother. Their old homestead, along with my parent's original farm, is where we now salvage from.

I often know when I am making an item exactly which building and where in that building the board came from. I love the character of the wood that you can only get from decades in the elements, from the marks of the saw in the rough cut lumber, from the rusted nail holes, all of it. I even love the frustration turned to satisfaction of figuring out how to work with lumber that is far from perfect.

It was been over 20 years since Danny passed away but I often think of him, hoping that he is looking down, happy to see new life is being breathed into his and his brother's life's work.
