I love these earrings. They are a nice light weight and they go with everything. I couldn't even find pipe bone earrings at my local Native American trading post. So glad I found these on Etsy. Thanks again!

About

Artist Spotlight

While in college, Catherine Taylor majored in interior design and for many years worked in furniture stores, as a wholesale furniture manufacturer's sales representative for The Lane Company, and a freelance interior designer. She then became a licensed life & health insurance agent and worked for major insurance companies in group employee benefits sales & service.

Her bead work journey started out due to a family tragedy. In 2005, her husband had a misdiagnosed blood clot. This subsequently resulted in an amputation which led to many other complications. His recovery was extremely long, and they were fortunate that she was able to care for him 24/7. That same year, she was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis and connective tissue disease. Her world as she once knew it was shattered; all she had known up to that point was a corporate world. She recalls how your world can virtually change overnight.

Several months after her husband's amputation, she started to teach herself to bead. She started with simple stringing which eventually grew as she gained new skills and new desires to expand her creativity. This led her to eventually try bead embroidery and bead weaving. She could find solace in her bead work as it became her passion. Through this learning process she found herself on a new journey and career.

Many of her inspirations come from the ocean since they used to live on the sea for six months out of the year on their own yacht they named the "Chip's Ahoy" after their son Chip. Many times her designs include dolphins, mermaids, seashells, starfish, and many other themes from the sea. However, they recently retired on 40 acres with an awesome view of the Rockies in southern Wyoming so you'll see a more western flair evolving. Catherine loves buying and collecting Native American art and jewelry. She enjoys designing Native Inspired jewelry. For Christmas 2017, her husband surprised her with her own art studio building which she has named the Tatanka Ranch "Bead Barn". Which you can see for yourself in the Shop photo's.

Other inspirations come from her large jewelry library of bead magazines and books from other bead artists. She has won awards and has been published. She also creates with crochet, paint, and sewing when time allows. You may locate her handmade bead embroidery shop with Etsy at

Catherine doesn't have one particular style but wants her pieces to enhance and make the wearer feel beautiful. Her styles tend to lean towards the romantic or Victorian preferring a more elegant theme in her work. Some designs are thought out beforehand, but she says most just evolve spontaneously. Since joining Etsy Bead Embroidery Guild the Bead Fest challenges have stretched her creativity with their first challenge in ways she herself wouldn't have and that they have had a positive effect on her beadwork vision and journey.

Her pieces usually start with a gemstone focal piece that sets the stage for her design. She says she tries to portray a story in each piece. She loves to work with unusual beads, crystals, or pearls and likes to use Miyuki and/or Toho seed beads.

Her beadwork has been a process about growing and learning that is always continuous and evolving. She wouldn't have it any other way. She has taught bead embroidery (and crochet/sewing) and hopes to be influential for others to expand their artistic talents in the bead world. She feels if just one person can feel the way she does about beadwork then it has all been worthwhile for her.

Catherine resides north of Fort Laramie, Wyoming with her spouse, John, and their frisky Bernese Mountain dog, Lulu. Besides designing jewelry, Catherine and her spouse are involved in community and culture events along with traveling. Her son, Brad, who resides in Lenexa, Kansas (and guest artist in Hawaii), specializes in tatoo artistry. Catherine enjoys playing with her seven granddaughter's and one grandson, visiting with family/friends, jewelry design, crocheting, music, teaching, and beach-combing for sea glass, seashells, and agates.
