FIASCO 101: CANADIAN TAXES AND ETSY
Since 2017 I have been registered with CRA to charge G/HST to Canadian customers. Etsy added the required G/HST amount to the bill, paid it to me, and I remitted it to CRA. This process worked.
Starting July 1, Etsy has informed Canadian shop owners that ever sale to Canadian customers will require G/HST being charged. In itself this is not a bad decision, but Etsy’s proposed implementation has serious implications you need to be aware of.
While G/HST will be charged to Canadian customers, Etsy’s involvement is changing. For people who operate a business without a CRA tax number, Etsy will collect and remit the G/HST to CRA.
But for my shop – and thousands of others who have gone the extra mile to secure a CRA tax number and provided it to Etsy – well, sales tax from our Canadian customers will no longer be shown, added to the bill or automatically collected by Etsy.
A confusing and confounding decision.
Instead, Etsy is requiring that, in order to meet our tax obligations under CRA rules to remit taxes appropriate for every Canadian customer sale, sellers with CRA tax numbers must increase our shop prices to include in the cost of goods the G/HST that would have normally been charged.
In other words, Canadian buyers visiting shops where owners are registered with the CRA will no longer see any taxes as a separate line item; instead the taxes are rolled into the item price in Canada.
Etsy’s policy is forcing me (and all other CRA registered shops) to figure out the best way to include the cost of the taxes. Regrettably, because Etsy is removing the mechanism it currently provides to determine the province of a buyer and thus the appropriate tax to charge, the only option we have is to increase prices by the highest provincial tax rate, which would be a 15% across the board for Canadian buyers.
I am simply at a loss to explain the logic of Etsy’s plan in this regard, and truly regret foisting their brain-fart on my Canadian shoppers.
2. From the Let’s Add Some Insult To Injury Dept: New shipping surcharges will be made public next week. Fingers crossed it’s moving down!
3. For items over $20 Etsy has moved the order quantity selection to the checkout page. Not that it really matters with Etsy trying to kill off sellers with its tax policies.

About luxcrafter
Unplanned for. And well planned.
In 2016 my sister retired from 40+ years in banking to spend time with the grandkids and - finally - have time to return to her love of sewing. I'd retired two years earlier. She bought an industrial sewing machine, found the Diva and NCW wallet patterns, and quickly became hooked on making wallets and bags and attending local craft and artisan shows. She got darn good at it, and her business - TTLG Creations (https://www.ttlgcreations.ca) - has flourished since.
But the cost of the wallet parts she needed was crazy, and as a grandmother of eight found the time needed to procure, test, evaluate and order frames and other hardware was taking a good bite out of the time she did have free to sew. So, in 2017, I started Luxcrafter with the initial purpose of sourcing a narrow range of parts for her so that she could concentrate on sewing. But as the quality I was able to secure under contract was so much better than either I or she had seen from other stores -- and especially the thin, substandard marred finished hardware that now abounds on Etsy sourced from AliExpress -- I decided to open my business to supply true quality hardware to other artisans at reasonable prices.
You do get what you pay for.

Frequently asked questions
SHIPPING FAQ :: Processing time
Barring unforeseen problems I will ship your order within one business day. Orders placed on Friday after 3pm are taken to ChitChats for Monday's pickup.
SHIPPING :: CANADA
Beginning Dec 27, 2021, only fully-tracked shipping is available to Canadian destinations. I use flat-rate shipping, with a modest Loonie upcharge for additional items added to the package.
This formula will be revisisted often to ensure costs are covered, and buyers are not paying more than the actual tracked shipping costs.
SHIPPING :: USA
Parcels to the USA are shipped using ChitChats who takes parcels daily to Niagara Falls NY to inject them into the USPS system This significantly improves both delivery times and the cost of shipping to US customers.
All orders heading stateside have full tracking.
I offer a flat-rate shipping charge with a modest upcharge for additional items added to the package. Shipping rates will be revisisted often to ensure costs are covered and buyers are not paying more than the actual tracked shipping costs.
Returns and Exchanges
If your shipment arrives with apparent damage from shipping make a claim with your local delivery service (e.g., Canada Post, USPS etc.). Be sure to document with photos before opening. Luxcrafter will not be responsible for damage caused by delivery services.
I inspect every item before shipping to ensure your order is in pristine condition. That said, I have a no-hassle return policy:
★ Contact me within 3 days of receipt with photos. If unused I will refund the cost of the item, or replace the defective item as we agree upon.
★ I will not issue a refund for any item until it has been returned to me and inspected.
★ Shipping cost paid by the buyer cannot regrettably be refunded.
Free shipping? Ooh nooo!
When I mark your order shipped you may receive a notification email from Etsy. Some now include "How about a little something extra? Free shipping! Get it on your next order."
Etsy is encouraging shops to offer "free" shipping, and to achieve "free" by adding the shipping costs to an item's price.
THIS IS MISLEADING AND IRRESPONSIBLE!
Therefore, despite your receiving such a notice with my store's name on it, Luxcrafter does not participate in Etsy's free shipping program.
Customers _must_ feel confident when ordering items that they are only paying one shipping charge, and that this charge is clearly and transparently displayed.
I recommend buyers beware of any store advertising so-called "free" shipping. Nothing is free.
