About

Who are the Pickle Punch Bunch?

Angela King and Mike de Kraker founded Pickle Punch in November 2012 in Vancouver British Columbia , and moved to Edmonton, Alberta in the summer of 2014 to work at Pickle Punch full time. They currently work from their home studio, alongside their young son and 3 rescue cats.

The Good:
Once upon a time we were both childless, carefree twenty-somethings living in big amazing cities like London and Vancouver. We were paid to animate for award-winning studios like Pixar, Aardman Animations, and Framestore-cfc. We went to galleries on the weekends, had parties, and worked on some incredible movies, video games, commercials and TV shows. We met lots of talented young folks doing the same thing, who taught us tricks of the trade, and we made some lifelong friends. We wouldn’t swap the good times for anything.

The Bad:
Once upon a time we were both childless, 12 hours a day-stressed-out workers living in the heart of big cities, like London and Vancouver. Weeks would go by before we stepped outside our cubicles. We ate takeout every day and didn’t walk anywhere except to the coffee machine and back. We were becoming unhealthy, and eventually unhappy, living our daily life. It was obvious that we needed to make some big changes. The great outdoors were calling, and our instincts were telling us to answer, but how, where, and when would we do it?

The Not-So-Ugly (actually we clean up quite well when we try):
While each of us brings a different perspective on design to the table, both of us are children of the 1970’s and grew up admiring the same imaginary characters in picture books, comics, weekend movies, and Saturday morning cartoons. Our childhood influences were similar and influence our creative choices today. To us, growing up meant spending all day outside in the sunshine, playing until we were filthy, hungry and exhausted. There was less for parents to fear then, and kids were free to just play and be kids. Now that we are parents to a sweet little boy, and illustrate for a living, we find ourselves drawing from our own childhoods—literally. Pickle Punch is inspired by those carefree times and aims to bring back a bit of wonder and whimsy to our modern lives.

***These fine days, you can find us in our studio being creative in one way or another, or filling orders, or chatting to our lovely customers and friends at craft shows. Maybe we'll even run in to you in the ravine where we go for walks and shenanigans everyday. Life is good!

Welcome to Pickle Punch...

By offering you our stationery and print line we want to encourage the relationship between people, animals, and nature through illustrations that can be shared with and enjoyed by all the family. Our art products offer a humorous and nostalgic take on woodland creatures, imagined beasties, and the curious and appreciative relationship we have with them. Our goal is for Pickle Punch to act as a vehicle for sharing your memories of times gone by, and for living in anticipation and enjoyment of what’s happening right now, together.

- We offer both Limited Edition and Open edition prints, on canvas and FSC approved fine art archival paper and card stock.

- We hand draw and color everything at home, and scan in the finished print, make adjustments if needed, and then have prints made from the original, all in Vancouver, BC

- All prints come ready to frame, and canvas is ready to hang!

More About Angela and Mike:

Having both worked for many years as Animators in Canada and the UK, for companies such as Aardman Animation, Framestore-cfc, and Pixar, both artists have learned a thing or two about character design, story, and motion. Mike has been drawing his whole life, and not a day passes where he isn't sketching from life or drawing out a new character. Angela has had training at Emily Carr University in painting, color theory, printmaking, and children's illustration. Both artists also share a love for fine art, film, and graphic novels, and are always immersed in some way in the picture world. Whether it’s visiting art galleries, story-boarding out a new idea, or painting a banner for their son’s birthday, we seem to always be involved in some kind of creative project.

Print Care and Framing Specifications:

Giclée Definition
pronounced (jee · clay or zhee - clay) derived from the French term meaning "spray of ink". The Giclée process creates one of the finest digital prints that can be created from an original.

What is a Giclée Print?
A Giclée print is a reproduction of a work of fine art using archival media, archival inks and high-resolution inkjet printing techniques.

Fine Art Archival Paper:
We use Somerset Velvet 100% Cotton Rag Paper.
This fine art paper is acid-free with an excellent archive lifetime of over 150 years. It is 100% cotton rag for long-term durability. It is also FSC Approved for sustainably.

Care:
- Artwork printed on archival paper requires extra care when handling, as it folds and creases easily.

- Please take extra care when pulling your print out of the shipping tube and when framing. Using a thumb and index finger, grasp the entire roll and pull towards you, and it will slide out easily.

- The printed surface should not be touched, as dirt and oils may damage the image

- Therefore, prints should be framed under glass using acid-free mounting materials and kept out of direct sunlight for increased longevity.

Canvas:
We use UV treated 100% Cotton Canvas, for durability and flexibility.

Care:
- Do not hang your canvas art in areas of extreme heat variations and humidity such as bathrooms or directly above radiators. If the relative humidity keeps on changing then the canvas will expand and contract.

- Canvas prints are not weatherproof so ensure you hang them inside the house.

- To clean the canvas just use a soft, dry, lint-free cloth. Electrostatic dust cloths and feather dusters also work well.

- Our canvases have a UV varnish applied to them to provide a protective layer to the material and ink.

- To remove dirt build up or splashes wipe very gently with a slightly damp soft cloth, then allow to dry. Never rub your canvas print too hard or continuously in the same area.

Authenticity
Pickle Punch participate in every step of the creation of the prints and approve the proofs and techniques utilized in their production; every print is personally inspected and approved as an authentic and accurate reproduction of the original For the purposes of authenticity and value, each print is autographed and numbered in pencil by the artist(s).

Framing Ideas
All of our paper prints fit into IKEA RIBBA frames, as well as a variety of their other styles. IKEA frames come with their own framing mats, that will fit better in their frames than the ones we provide, because they use Metric. Our framing mats are included so that you can also easily frame your print in a standard Imperial measurement frame. This way you shouldn't have any trouble finding a frame for your print.

Canvas prints come ready to hang, with the mounting and wire already secured to the back. All you have to do is chose the perfect spot for it!
