Artist of things.

I’m Suzy the creator behind suzannayellow and I dabble in many fields of art! I love to paint, colour, art-journal, glue, sew, stick, destroy and re-purpose items. By trade I am a glassblower and I am fortunate enough to get to practice this in the near by town of Campbell River.

I was born and raised the small town of Whakatane, New Zealand but moved to Canada in 2013 and now live on Vancouver Island with my family. I studied glass at the Wanganui Glass School, New Zealand. While living in Wanganui I was lucky enough to assist for many of New Zealand’s most prestigious glass artists and be apart of Lyndsay Patterson’s team who blew all the glass for The Hobbit.

After becoming a mother my glass career slowed down while I cared for my little ones. During this time I started taking papers through the fine arts dipIoma at North Island College which include drawing, painting and ceramics. I love trying all creative outlets and think this is an important part of finding out what you truly love to do. A golden lining to my sleep deprived days of early motherhood is that I found art-journaling and fell deeply in love with its ease and therapeutic nature. I now find this is my most used way of expressing myself quickly via art form. This is where I grow many of my ideas that I then carry forth to my other mediums.

Had I never stoped blowing glass I wouldn’t have found this special artistic outlet. What I have learnt as an artist since becoming a mother is that growth doesn’t just have to happen in one direction and in-fact it is beneficial and unavoidable for growth to happen in many directions. Sometimes certain practices have to be forgotten to make way for new ones to grow and thats OK too. Just as if you never remove the weeds from the garden there will be no room for new ones grow and bloom.

So now when I find myself back with glass I love how much broader my outlook is. Because I have such a consistent art practice in my life now inspiration isn’t something I have to look for but rather something I feel bubbling up from deep inside of me.
