BIO
A graduate of the Rhode Island School of Design, Farrah spent years in the fashion industry, designing the tabletop collections for Calvin Klein, as well as other luxury home decor brands.
Although designing and traveling overseas was enjoyable, the big picture was off. As the market place trended towards producing MORE goods for CHEAPER, maximizing profit for the company by sacrificing quality and ethics, outsourcing production overseas, the question of "WHY design" urged the leap.
Farrah realized she needed to get her hands dirty again and return to the heart of the design process.
She started working with my hands again, designing and making furniture and home accessories, doing everything from metal welding to hand carving wood, to ceramics to forging flatware. There was peace in the process and meaning in the craft.
For this reason, she’s particularly inspired by objects that have an artisanal hand-hewn quality, and her own monochromatic pieces play upon the lively interchange between texture and form, in an attempt to create a kind of “perfect imperfection”.
The design process is driven by an obsession with form, utility and exploring the emotive connection between the object and its user. For this reason, the brand shies away from over-designing objects, and instead focuses on creating strikingly simple designs that speak to their intended purpose.
Light and Ladder was founded to bring a modern approach to traditional American craft, creating thoughtful, timeless pieces made in the USA.
