Homemakerpottery

Ik maak kleine batches, handgemaakt aardewerk vanuit mijn thuisstudio in het noordoosten van Atlanta, Georgia. Mijn meerstapsproces omvat lagen onderglazuur, slips en handgesneden, originele papierontwerpen. Ik hou ervan om kleurrijk, vrolijk functioneel aardewerk te maken!

Elk stuk wordt door mij op een pottenbakkersschijf gegooid. Zodra het zijn vorm kan behouden terwijl het wordt vastgehouden, gaat het terug op het wiel om te worden bijgesneden en wordt er indien nodig een getrokken handgreep aan bevestigd. In dit stadium worden lagen (en lagen!) Slip-, onderglazuur- en handgemaakte papierresist-patronen gebruikt, waarna het stuk volledig mag drogen. Vervolgens wordt het bisque in de oven gebakken. Ik gebruik een schuurpad om de rand en het handvat glad te strijken voordat ik elk stuk met de hand glaceer en het opnieuw wordt gebakken. Ten slotte schuur en maak ik de basis glad, en het stuk is voltooid!

Ik onderzoek graag de eindeloze mogelijkheden en uitdagingen die het werken met aardewerk biedt, en ik geloof dat elk voltooid stuk speciaal is omdat het uniek is.

I create small batch, handmade pottery out of my home studio in northeast Atlanta, Georgia. My multi-step process includes layers of underglaze, slips and hand-cut, original paper designs. I love to create colorful, happy functional pottery!

Each piece is thrown by me on a potter’s wheel. Once it can retain its shape while being held, it goes back on the wheel for trimming and a pulled handle is attached if needed. Layers (and layers!) of slip, underglaze and handmade paper-resist patterns are used at this stage, and then the piece is allowed to completely dry. Next, it is bisque fired in the kiln. I use a sanding pad to smooth out the rim and handle before I glaze each piece by hand, and it is fired again. Finally, I sand and smooth the base, and the piece is complete!

I love exploring the endless possibilities and challenges that working with pottery offers, and I believe that each finished piece is special because it is one-of-a-kind.
