Go back to 1967 to find the beginnings of the Primal Sound in Forestville, CA about one-mile from Bohemian Grove and the Russian River. Idyllic growing up there included our five-piece rock group, The Contraption, opening for Country Joe, Huey Lewis' Clover, or Steve Miller at venues from Berkeley, SF, Sonoma and Eureka. The shop Primal Sound was fully operational in 1968 -1970 and featured Black Light posters, 60's LPs, books on Fairy Tales, Yoga, Mediation, and varieties of musical instruments. A close cousin, Jerry DeFucio was the man in charge of PR at MAD Magazine, and supplied the store with goods, the shelves were built from recycled barnwood and the psychedelic sign hung with the store name was enhanced with large carved out lettered signs for Records and Books, as shopper ascended the adjoining staircase to the top second floor of the previous motel room that was the Primal Sound shop. A carrousel of barnwood shelving rotating within a closet carried books, the bathroom lite up with black light posters on the walls, and the old 8-track played tunes for guests.
After a purchase of nearly 1000 78 rpm records in the 80s, the shop began working on auctions then, shifted online in the 90s with printed materials, advertising programs, and marketing small businesses. From there, Joining online auction sites and using print the owner, Robert, continues featuring the more collectible items he finds on several websites. His career zoomed into recognition with seven books in print on touring California, its history, recreation and events.
