Create a soft, modern quilt inspired by sun-faded adobe walls, warm desert tones, worn stone steps, and quiet cottage interiors with the Sunwashed Steps Quilt Pattern.

This beginner-friendly digital PDF quilt pattern features small colored squares arranged in diagonal step formations across a large neutral background. Two simple block orientations alternate throughout the quilt to create a gentle zigzag rhythm that looks polished and modern while remaining easy to sew.

The pattern uses:

Squares and rectangles only
Straight seams only
One repeated block
Two easy block orientations
No triangles
No curves
No appliqué
No paper piecing
No templates
No specialty rulers
No difficult points to match

The finished Sunwashed Steps Quilt is perfect for boho bedrooms, modern nurseries, cottage-style guest rooms, sofas, reading nooks, daybeds, and handmade housewarming gifts.

What You’ll Make

You will make a cozy throw-size quilt using 20 quilt blocks arranged in a 4 blocks across by 5 rows down layout.

Each block contains three colored squares that step diagonally across a cream or oatmeal background.

The pattern includes two orientations:

Block A: top left to center to bottom right
Block B: top right to center to bottom left

Block B is simply Block A rotated 180 degrees, so you do not need to learn a second construction method.

Alternating the two block directions creates the finished stepped zigzag design.

Why You’ll Love This Pattern

The Sunwashed Steps Quilt has a modern geometric look while using very simple construction.

Each block is made from three horizontal rows. The colored square moves from one side to the center and then to the opposite side, creating a diagonal staircase.

The second block direction is made by rotating the completed block 180 degrees, which keeps the sewing simple while creating more movement in the finished quilt.

The large neutral background gives the design a soft, airy appearance and helps the colored steps stand out.

This pattern is also easy to customize. Use one terracotta fabric for a minimalist version, alternate clay and sage for a two-color quilt, use many scraps for a playful design, or arrange the blocks from light to dark for an ombré effect.

It is a great first quilt for learning accurate cutting, consistent seams, block assembly, block rotation, layout planning, quilting, and binding.
