Years ago I restored a 1920's bungalow. During this process, I enjoyed tooling around an old salvage store in downtown, rummaging through boxes of old doorknobs, casters, finials and hinges. Eventually, as we began to welcome guests into our "finished" home, our need for a coat rack intersected with these antique items' need for a new use.
Years later, we restored a second bungalow to accommodate our growing family. Upon its completion, I bartered two old doors for some weathered barn wood, antique doorknobs, coat hooks, hinges and casters. This was the beginning of rustics reborn.
My workbench (a table loosely laid upon two sawhorses) is bathed in sunlight and surrounded by my sons' riding toys and plastic tools. While I drill and saw, my oldest loves to hold the measuring tape and wrench, waiting and willing (usually) to return them to my hand when needed.
I often wonder to what room each doorknob led, whose winter coat hung upon this coat hook or whose daily lives revolved around this old barn. Each piece I fashion is a unique assemblage of stories, journeys and the creative process. I hope the wonder and possibility of each intersecting story brings you a touch of warmth and functionality.
