A Nine-To-Five Drop Out Who Makes Clothes & Things A More Sustainable Way
I've always loved to design and sew clothes since I can remember, which is why I decided to get a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Fashion Design from the Academy of Art University in San Francisco, California.
Upon entering the fashion industry it became very apparent to me how incredibly harmful the industry is to our environment - from the material sourcing to the fabric dying and sewing process. I've worked for a few fashion brands and have seen first hand how wasteful and harmful the creation of fast fashion is for the environment and its workers, so I made it a goal to not contribute to that. When I decided to start my own brand, two things were at the top of my list - ethics and sustainability.
I have made it my goal to be as sustainable as I can in my own personal life as well as within my brand. However, sustainability is easier said than done, and I'm still learning along the way on how I can improve and be more sustainable throughout the entire process.
For beginners I only make-on-demand. Which means I will BRING TO THE WORLD ONLY THAT WHICH PEOPLE WANT. This means that every item I'm working on, already has an owner. This ensures that I make products that are made in a responsible way while avoid excess inventory.
The fabrics I use to create my garments are all sustainable in some way, shape, or form. I use dead-stock fabric - which are usually leftovers from textile mills or designers. They are often disposed of due to being unwanted by the designer/brand or because there was a surplus of it.
I also use natural fiber fabrics which are produced with natural fibers such as cotton, bamboo, or hemp. Since they’re made with natural fibers, if they were to end up thrown out, these fabrics would naturally biodegrade. Additionally, these fabrics tend to be dyed with eco-friendly, non-toxic dyes. Utilizing these fabrics helps in reducing the usage of synthetic fabrics that shed micro-plastics into our environment.
Additionally, as a Zero Waste Designer (ZWD) I repurpose the scraps of fabric left over from the garments I produce.
I welcome you to be part of my journey. It's time we rethink our relationship to clothes and how we can be kinder to our Earth and Ourselves.
