Unusual and eye-catching Seaham sea glass set in art or jewellery
Here at The Crafty Fox I use hand collected sea glass and driftwood used in my work from my local beaches in Seaham, United Kingdom.
Seaham is a small seaside town famous for sea glass. People travel from all over the world to come and comb the beaches to find its precious jewels.
What is sea glass? Victorian Seaham was a thriving, industrial town. It had 3 collieries, a pottery, a bottleworks, dockyards and more. You can still make out the train tracks that go along parts of the beaches.
The bottleworks was situated on the cliff tops by the sea. It would directly dump excess glass daily into the sea. This gives us the sparkling treasure known as sea glass.
To see Seaham today you would not believe all that had been here as little physical evidence exists to see. There is a rainbow of colours to be found laying on the top of the sand or pebbles and varying levels of rarity, with red, orange and purple being the rarest. Seaham is also lucky to provide what locals call 'multis'. These are very rare and if a special piece is found you may just see a happy dance from its finder.
I use these treasures from the sea to make jewellery and art, and the occasional fun pieces like the Pebble People. After compliments and people asking if I sold my work, I decided to take the chance and begin a small business and here it is; The Crafty Fox. I hope you enjoy my work as much as I enjoyed making it.
