Hoe ik mijn kinderen onder de 6 jaar lang bezig houd zonder schermtijd!
How I keep my children under 6 busy for a long time without any screentime!
Ik ben een SAHM-moeder van twee energieke jongens onder de 6. Tijdens de pandemie liep ik tegen een wegversperring aan omdat ik de hele dag thuis vastzat. Er was veel schermtijd, de rotzooi van speelgoed, zintuiglijke bakken en kunst en knutselen. Dit liet me uitgeput en uitgeput achter zonder tijd voor zelfzorg, het koken van het avondeten in alle rust of zelfs het drinken van een kopje hete koffie. Ik was moe, uitgeput en chagrijniger dan de kinderen!
Ik besloot om mijn oudere kind thuisonderwijs te geven en afgedrukte werkbladen en traceerpagina's op onze eerste dag . . . . raad eens wat er gebeurde? Het was een ramp!!
Hij weigerde een enkel werkblad te doen en mijn jongste was constant op mijn heup om aandacht te vragen, waardoor ik zo gefrustreerd was.
Zo begon mijn reis met het afdrukken van drukke boeken, flashcards en leerposters / grafieken voor zowel mijn kinderen als ik noemde het LearningPacks. Ik heb thema's waar peuters van houden (zoals regenbogen, voertuigen, dinosaurussen en dieren) opgenomen in het onderwijs. De activiteitenpagina's werden gelamineerd (of in plastic hoezen gedaan) om ze herbruikbaar te maken en georganiseerd in ordners en ik hield er een pak herbruikbare markers bij.
Raad eens, wat gebeurde er daarna?
beide kinderen voltooiden rustig al hun drukke boekpagina's met minimale hulp
beiden waren BLIJ en ENTHOUSIAST over de leeractiviteiten
beide eisten geen schermtijd!
Ze werden vermaakt en verdiept voor een lange tijd
GEEN DRIFTBUI!
Geen ruzies
Geen rommel
En hoe zit het met 'De Moeder'?
Nou, ik kon EINDELIJK
Kook het diner in alle rust
Drink rustig KOFFIE
Douchen
zonder veel SCREENTIME!

Hands-on activiteiten zijn uitstekend voor kinderen, maar de meeste van hen eindigen met een GROTE PUINHOOP en zijn helemaal niet praktisch als je eindelijk klaar bent met het diner alleen om sensorische rijst over de vloer te vinden.
Ik vreesde hands-on activiteiten omdat er Play-Doh op het tapijt was geplakt, verf op de muren, grote plas water op de vloer!
Nou, ik ben er niet TEGEN, maar het vereist VOLLEDIG toezicht om de puinhoop te voorkomen.
En als je je schuldig voelt over het geven van te veel schermtijd - dat is oké! Ik heb het ook :) Moeders hebben een mentale EN fysieke pauze nodig, toch?

I am a SAHM mom of two energetic boys under 6. During the pandemic, I hit a roadblock being stuck at home the whole day. There was lots of screen time, the mess from toys, sensory bins, and art and crafts. This left me drained and exhausted with no time for self-care, cooking dinner in peace, or even having a cup of hot coffee. I was tired, exhausted, and crankier than the kids!
I decided to homeschool my older child and printed worksheets and tracing pages on our first day….guess what happened? It was a disaster!!
He refused to do a single worksheet and my younger one was constantly at my hip demanding attention leaving me so frustrated.
Thus my journey began in making busy books printable, flashcards, and Learning posters/charts for both my kids and I called it LearningPacks. I incorporated themes that toddlers love (like rainbows, vehicles, dinosaurs, and animals) with education. The activity pages were laminated(or put in plastic sleeves) to make them reusable and organized in binders and I kept a pack of reusable markers with it.
Guess, What happened next?
both the children quietly completed all their busy book pages with minimal assistance
both were HAPPY and EXCITED about the learning activities
both didn't demand screen time!
They were entertained and engrossed for a long time
NO TANTRUM!
No fights

Hands-on activities are excellent for children but most of them end up with a BIG MESS and are not at all practical when you are finally done with the dinner only to find sensory rice all over the floor.
I dreaded hands-on activities as there was Play-Doh stuck on the carpet, paints on the walls, big puddle of water on the floor!
Well, I am not AGAINST it but it requires COMPLETE supervision to avoid the mess.
And if you are feeling guilty about giving too much screen time - that's okay! I have done it too :) Moms need a mental AND physical break, right?
