Un nuovo amore
A scuola c'erano quattro anni di lezioni d'arte in cui mi sentivo sempre inadeguato. Sì, ho imparato a dipingere e fare tutti i tipi di mestieri tra cui calligrafia, fotografia e ho lavorato con gesso, argilla e altri media. Avevo imparato a cucire, lavorare all'uncinetto, lavorare a maglia e fare ricami, punto croce e anche tutte quelle forme di ricamo. Mentre tutto ciò era ed è ancora piacevole, il mezzo che ha davvero catturato il mio interesse è venuto più tardi nella vita ed è il bellissimo mondo delle perle di vetro che consentono di presentare un'immagine in uno stile quasi a mosaico. Ho iniziato con il tipo semi-prezioso di perline in tutti i tipi di progetti di incordatura, ma poi un giorno ho scoperto le favolose piccole perle di vetro chiamate Delica. Il vetro colorato è sempre stato qualcosa che ho amato, ma l'idea di tagliare il vetro non mi piaceva affatto. Quindi essere in grado di progettare e realizzare immagini senza il pericolo di tagliarmi mi è sembrato davvero meraviglioso. Diamo da mangiare agli uccelli nel nostro cortile sul retro ed essendo su un flyway vediamo tutti i tipi di uccelli migratori e quindi sembravano soggetti "naturali". Ho iniziato con carta millimetrata e matita, ma era oh, quindi molto lento. Mio marito scatta foto meravigliose e con i progressi del software per computer la possibilità di progettazione è avanzata enormemente e ha davvero aiutato la mia creazione di modelli. Mi piace fare motivi astratti, geometrici, dalla mia immaginazione e scene da fotografie. Recentemente ho fatto un po' di ritratti e questa è un'altra sfida. Ci sono anche molti modelli religiosi nel mio folio di disegni. Non riesco a spiegare perché un'idea o un'immagine si agganci alla mia mente, ma spesso solo un assaggio di qualcosa cattura la mia fantasia e richiede di essere catturato per sempre in una forma simile a un arazzo di perline.
Sono sposato ormai da 58 anni, ho 5 figli, 16 nipoti e presto saranno 12 pronipoti. La vita è stata buona e solo il buon Dio sa cosa c'è dopo.

A New Love
In school there were four years of art classes where I always felt inadequate. Yes, I learned to paint and do all sorts of crafts including calligraphy, photography and worked with plaster, clay and other media. I had learned to sew, crochet, knit and did embroidery, cross stitch and all those forms of needlework, too. While all of that was and is still enjoyable the medium that has really caught my interest came later in life and is the beautiful world of glass beads which allow one to present an image in almost a mosaic style. I started with the semi-precious kind of beads in all sorts of stringing projects but then one day discovered the fabulous tiny glass beads called Delica. Stained glass was always something I loved but the idea of cutting the glass did not appeal to me at all. So to be able to design and make images without the danger of cutting myself seemed wonderful indeed. We feed the birds in our back yard and being on a flyway see all sorts of migrating birds and so they seemed like "natural" subjects. I began with pencil and graph paper but that was oh, so very slow. My husband takes wonderful pictures and with the advances of computer software the possibility for design has advanced tremendously and has really helped my pattern making. I like to do abstract, geometric, patterns from my imagination and scenes from photographs. Recently I have done some portrait work and that is another challenge. There are also many religious patterns in my folio of designs. I can't explain why an idea or image latches on in my mind but often just a glimpse of something catches my fancy and demands to be caught forever in a beaded tapestry like form.
I have been married now for 58 years, have 5 children, 16 grandchildren and soon it will be 12 great grandchildren. Life has been good and only the good Lord knows what is next.
