Potters need the right environment for their creativity. Niki and Günter Hermans have been working as ceramists for years and have found their paradise in Lower Bavaria. The old farm in Fraundorf is a refuge for humans and animals. This is where the new ideas emerge that turn the ancient material clay into lovable ceramics.
On the farm, peacocks, sheep and two tame deer, Chinese muntjaks, pheasants, vulture guinea fowl and tame jackdaws live together peacefully around the duck pond, while the artist couple feels just as committed to tradition as to the development of new ceramic products.
Rural life is reflected in the work: the glazes correspond to the colours of nature – for example, with the blue glow of an autumn sky and the delicate green of spring. And so the circle closes between the material clay, which comes from the earth, and the joy of design of Niki and Günter, which arises only in the head.
The demands on quality and aesthetics determine the choice of tone, shape and glaze. The couple sources clay and porcelain from the Westerwald. For the glazes, the two collect some of the raw materials themselves: ashes of straw, wood, lavender, bark briquette and even olive wood. Minerals, including shale, are also suppliers of raw materials. It is an elaborate and lengthy procedure that requires many attempts in the field of clay and glaze composition. The reward for this is the exclusive uniqueness of the artistic-artisanal work.
Firing takes place in the gas furnace at about 1300 ° C in an oxidizing or reducing furnace atmosphere, whereby ash and seladon feldspar glazes achieve their characteristic image.
All glazes are food-safe, lead-free and dishwasher safe. When used correctly, the refractory vessels are to be used not only in the oven and microwave but also on the gas, electricity and wood stove for cooking and frying.
