The origin

After the birth of my second child in May 2007 Lotte (Oskar, my son was almost three years old) I actually only really started with the "right" sewing.
At that time I was already quite familiar with the range of Scandinavian children's fashion labels and found the things all incredibly beautiful (by the way, one of my biggest weaknesses to this day is constantly researching on the Internet for beautiful children's clothes and ultimately being inspired by them). However, I found the prices for most things just too high, considering that children always wear their clothes for a very limited time. They grow like weeds! So I started to look for beautiful fabrics and then – above all – to sew trousers, dungarees and sweaters myself.
The feedback on the self-sewn things both in the circle of friends and acquaintances, as well as on the playground, etc. were always very positive. I have often been asked about my children's clothes. I liked that. Clear. But then I didn't think about becoming self-employed in any way.
This only came about via detours at the beginning of 2012. A friend, my sister and I suddenly got the feeling that we wanted to change our careers. We wanted to get out of the boring everyday life and do something "beautiful". Sewing and a penchant for beautiful fabrics have long been our common denominator. So at first we thought of our own small fabric shop with a shop in a suitable district in Cologne. Quite naïve, of course. After a few weeks of research, it quickly became clear that this is not so easy. For an online shop, the other two did not want to be warmed up – quite apart from the fact that there are now fabric shops like sand on the sea. Thus the dream of owning his own shop was burst for the time being.
But I couldn't just accept that. I just wanted a fresh start.
And that's when the inspiration came to me – almost overnight: self-sewing packages for children's clothing. That's it. That didn't exist then, nowhere (and I think it still is). So in the spring of 2012 I had found my idea, my unique selling point. And also one thing that I really enjoy, what is creative, where you can design and try beautiful things. More than just selling fabrics. Top! It should be!

The goal was clear. However, a good 18 months have passed before the own shop on Dawanda.
In the beginning there was a lot of Internet research, establishing contacts to small fabric labels, refining the concept, graphic works to develop a round CI, setting up a website, etc. What luck that I was able to do it all on my own. My studies have already paid off.

And then the first pattern had to be scaled to various sizes in parallel. Heavens, I didn't expect this to be so hard! Until then, I had only sewn clothes especially for my children – so only in two different sizes.
This step cost me a lot of patience and initially brought with it precipitation again and again. I had to get very into it. Discussions with professionals followed. Gradually, my know-how finally grew. And now it's easier for me, because from every project you gain experience that makes it easier to tackle the next project.
Nevertheless, all cuts are still "sample-sewn" in various sizes and tried out on the children of friends. Does the shirt fit? Is it long enough? Do the sleeves fit? Is it too wide/too narrow? It's a good thing that as a parent you have many other children in the immediate vicinity. Sometimes one or the other kindergarten buddy has to serve as a test child.

The opening of the huhuUhu shop was at the beginning of September 2013. From then on, I offered the first DIY packages for long-sleeved shirts. Actually, that was still much too early for me. Because I actually wanted to offer not only sweater sewing packages, but also sewing sets for other children's clothing. after all, huhuUhu should one day become a real children's clothing label. One where you can get all the "important" clothes – sweaters, T-shirts, dresses, skirts, trousers, caps... But there is still a long way to go.
The development of a sewing pact, including cutting and instructions, takes at least three months, possibly longer. A lot of work if you do it all by yourself. But it's a hell of a lot of fun. And that's the main thing.
