About MARMORPAPETERIE
LET YOUR MIND FLOW – THE ART OF MARBLING
(german version below)
My mission:
Breathe new life into an ancient craftsmanship – marble paper.
Whether delicate tendrils, intoxicating clouds or wild explosions of color: each marbled paper is a small work of art in itself and also a real unique piece. Because each pattern exists only once due to the technology. What is equivalent to a printing process happens here via inks that are made to float on the water surface. By means of pipettes, combs or brushes, these are woven into imaginative patterns and then removed with a sheet of paper and printed. What sounds simple at first is a small science in itself and needs a lot of practice and a little patience. Because both the water bath and the colors have to be specially mixed.
A box decorated or a cabinet decorated, used as an attachment or writing paper — marble paper enjoyed great popularity as early as the 16th century and was even used as paper for official documents due to its anti-counterfeiting.
Rooted in asia, it later succeeded in Turkey and Persia, until it finally found its way to Europe in the 17th century and was mainly used for bookbinding work. Since then, the fields of application of the art of marbling have been at least as multifaceted as its history. Whether in therapeutic treatments, language promotion or in art and occupational therapy measures – no wonder that the Ebru art, as it is called in Turkey, has been included in the list of intangible world cultural heritage of UNESCO since 2011.

With HAND MARBLED PAPERS, Bremen-based graphic designer Josie Majetic breathes new life into a traditional handicraft: paper marbling. Whether delicate twines, intoxicating clouds or even wild coloured explosions: every sheet of marbled paper is a small work of art in itself and also a real one of a kind. Because of the way it is created, each pattern is unique. It is a process similar to printing, where paint is free to float on the water's surface. Pipettes, combs or brushes are used to weave mesmerising patterns which are then captured and printed on a sheet of paper. What sounds simple at first is a science in itself, requiring a lot of practice and a little bit of patience. Because both the water bath and the paint have to be specially mixed.
For decorating a casket or adorning a cabinet, used as a book lining or writing paper – as early as the 16th Century, marbled paper enjoyed great popularity and was even used as paper for official documents to protect against forgeries. With roots in Asia, it later made its way to Turkey and Persia, until it finally arrived in Europe in the 17th Century and was mainly used for bookbinding. Since then, the art of marbling has been utilised in a multitude of applications as rich as its history. Whether in therapeutic treatments, language support or in art and occupational therapy – no wonder Ebru art, as it is called in Turkey, has been included in the list of UNESCO's Intangible World Cultural Heritage since 2011.
