THE KNIT KID

An interview published on Sept 03, 2012 on the US Etsy Blog:

My name is Sabrina Weigt and I live and work in Berlin, Germany. I make high quality knitwear and knitted accessories.

Briefly describe your process.

I don´t have a constant process for how I do my work. Sometimes an idea hits me and I try to transfer that into a garment. Sometimes I´m just trying out new yarn or a new pattern and suddenly hold something in my hands that actually make total sense without me realizing it could before. I try to allow myself to just go ahead with an idea even if it´s against my better judgment. I´m just at the beginning of designing and I want to learn as much as I can. So I follow different methods of getting to a result and try to stay open minded at all steps on the way there.
But I guess I´m doing all of the following in changing order at some point of the process: getting inspiration, thinking about shape, color, texture, ..., buying yarn, knitting, sewing pieces together by hand, steam, wash, brush, sometime dye.

Why do you do what you do?

After being done with my bachelor studies in fashion design I knew I had one year before I could possible start the master program. I was in such a work flow from the work on the bachelor thesis that I just kept going. There were so many ideas and yarn waiting for me and I just started doing whatever I thought was worth trying. Of course I though about selling my clothes long before now but I wouldn´t have been comfortable with selling something that I wasn´t 100% satisfied with. Now I know what I´m doing, I know that how I´m making my clothes is the best quality I know of and therefor I´m comfortable with selling it.

What does Etsy mean to you?

To sell on Etsy means that I can sell to people all over the world very easily. Isn´t it just amazing to picture the sweater you made at home being worn in Japan? To me it feels a bit like my work is going out to discover the world. But Etsy also means getting to know creative people from where I live. In Berlin we have the Etsy Street Team and meet once a month to discuss business, organize events and just have fun together. I like how easy it is to get in touch with so many different people and I really appreciate the feedback you get from them. You learn a lot based on the feedback you get and it is very motivating if you have the feeling people like what you do.

What's unique about your business? What sets it apart from the competition?

My business is 100% me and I´m unique and therefor my business is, too. I just do what I think is best and and right now I don´t see a reason to think about the competition too much. I focus on what I think is important and do my best to realize my ideas. If that doesn´t work out, I will find out soon enough.

How has your creative business changed you?

I learned very quickly that being creative and having a creative business are two completely different things. The creative work is just a small percentage of what has to be done in a creative business and sometimes I´m finding it difficult not to be able let the creativity out, just because there is not enough time for it. But I think this is how it is in the beginning of a small business like mine and that soon I will learn how to find a good balance.
