Uno dei miei beni preferiti è una bambola Raggedy Ann fatta a mano che ho avuto da quando ero piccola - più piccola della bambola, in effetti. Ora è un po' ruvida intorno ai bordi, ma mi fa ancora sorridere. In questi giorni appartiene a mia figlia, che le sorride ogni volta che spia Raggedy dalla sua culla.

Sono sempre stato più felice quando mi sono perso nel processo di creazione di qualcosa di nuovo e amo sognare ad occhi aperti che le cose che faccio diventeranno una fonte di conforto e divertimento per i loro nuovi proprietari. Mi piace pensare che la trapunta o il giocattolo rimarranno con loro e diventeranno un ricordo tangibile dell'infanzia, proprio come Raggedy è per me.

Tutto ciò che faccio è pensato per essere usato e amato. Le trapunte diventano più morbide solo con l'età; i giocattoli diventano ancora più accattivanti quando è chiaro che vengono giocati spesso. Per questi motivi, lavoro duramente per assicurarmi che le cose che faccio siano fatte bene, siano facili da curare e, soprattutto, siano piacevoli da guardare e toccare.

Cucio da diversi anni, che è diventato il mio principale sbocco creativo, ma ho sempre amato essere creativo. Dall'insegnamento del ricamo da parte di mia madre, al club all'uncinetto in grado 5; lezioni d'arte al liceo e in seguito insegnare a cucire e lavorare a maglia, adoro trovare nuove tecniche e mezzi con cui lavorare. Per me il prossimo passo logico è stato quello di aprire il mio negozio e iniziare a fare ciò che amo come qualcosa di più di una semplice attività tranquilla a casa.

One of my favourite possessions is a handmade Raggedy Ann doll that I've had since I was small - smaller than the doll, in fact. She's a little rough around the edges now, but she still makes me smile. These days she belongs to my daughter, who grins at her whenever she spies Raggedy from her crib.

I've always been happiest when I'm lost in the process of creating something new and I love to daydream that the things I make will go on to become a source of comfort and fun for their new owners. I like to think that the quilt or toy will stay with them and become a tangible reminder of childhood, much like Raggedy is for me.

Everything I make is meant to be used and loved. Quilts only become softer as they age; toys become all the more endearing when it's clear they're played with often. For these reasons, I work hard to make sure the things I make are made well, are easy to care for and, most importantly, are pleasing to look at and touch.

I've been sewing for a number of years now, which has become my primary creative outlet, but I've always loved being creative. From being taught to embroider by my mother, to crochet club in grade 5; art classes in high school and later teaching myself to sew and knit, I love finding new techniques and mediums to work with. For me the next logical step has been to open my shop and start doing what I love as more than just a quiet pursuit at home.
