TheRopestry - chemical-free, sustainable & biodegradable jute ropes for bondage in premium quality

Hello and welcome to TheRopestry!

We are your specialist for chemical-free and sustainable jute ropes for bondage, Shibari, Kinbaku & Co., which are specially designed and manufactured for prolonged skin contact. In contrast to conventional jute ropes, our ropes are free of carcinogenic mineral batching oil, pesticides and fertilizers. This makes them unique in the market.

Each rope is oiled, waxed and flamed by hand and offered for sale ready to use. Blindfolds and textiles for the care and storage of jute ropes complete our range.
Whether for the bondage professional, beginner or amateur - our ropes are wonderful to use, light and strong.

The jute yarn used for our ropes is manufactured according to our specification. We control the entire process starting with the jute cultivation (soil, seeds, environmentally friendly growth aids), harvesting, cleaning, spinning of the yarn and finally the production of the raw rope in a German rope factory.

We use Class 1 Tossa jute for our ropes, the best quality available on the market. This variety is ideal for early sowing. It offers high yields, makes fibre extraction easier and reduces the likelihood of filament damage. Compared to other types of jute, it is the least susceptible to insect damage and root rot. Thus no insecticides and fungicides against mosquitoes are required and bio-insecticides are reduced to an absolute minimum.

The batching oil "glues" the individual jute filaments so a yarn can be spun from them. Here we use expeller-pressed soybean oil, which has been fortified with 100% vitamin A + D as well as omega 3 and 6. This oil is odourless and does not go rancid.
The soybeans used for the soybean oil are grown as part of a UNICEF-UNESCO social project, are of high quality, GMO-free and are only transported via waterways.

In all phases of the manufacturing process, we take care to avoid contamination with mineral oil and other substances.

Our yarn is therefore of food-grade quality and our ropes are 100% chemical-free, biodegradable, sustainable and environmentally friendly. In theory, they are edible. However, we advise against this. :-)

Jute ropes always lose fine fibres when used. This is due to the nature of the material. Through our conditioning methods, we reduce these loose fibres as much as possible.
For our standard ropes, we use a butter made from organic jojoba oil and beeswax in the conditioning process. Our vegan ropes are treated with a butter made from organic jojoba oil and berry wax.

Etsy gives us the opportunity to offer our ropes and accessories to customers around the globe and thus reach customers from all bondage disciplines to convince and inspire them of the excellent quality and uniqueness of our ropes.

Our ropes are a high quality product based on the cradle-to-cradle principle (from nature - back to nature), professional in handling and pleasantly soft and skin-friendly on the skin - simply perfect for Shibari, Kinbaku, bondage & Co.

Our service for you: When putting together our bondage sets, we are happy to consider your individual wishes and requirements. Please contact us! We're here for you!

Your pleasure is our motivation. A healthy planet our mission.

Frequently asked questions
Which rope is the best rope for my use case?

We recommend:

6mm ropes - for ground as well as for suspension work with persons with a body weight of 70 - 80 kg (11st – 12st 8lb / 154lb - 176lb). For people who bruise easily, we recommend this rope size as well.

5.5 mm ropes - for ground work, as well as for suspension work of persons weighing less than 70 kg (11st / 154lb).

5 mm ropes - mainly for ground work or suspension work with very lightweight persons

4.4 mm ropes - mainly for ground work, as well as for creative work such as woven corsets.

General rule: The thicker the rope, the more surface is available to distribute the (body) weight, and the less the rope cuts into the flesh. This is especially true for suspension work.

How should I store my ropes?

- Keep your ropes away from excessive heat, light and moisture. - Do not store your ropes near heat sources, in a humid environment and protect them from direct sunlight. - Twisted ropes have a positional memory. Therefore, do not store your ropes as tightly wound bundles over a long period of time. - Store your ropes in an air-permeable packaging (such as a cloth bag), but NEVER in a plastic bag or container as the ropes could otherwise sweat. - Store your ropes at room temperature and hang them loosely over a pole, e.g. a curtain rod, which is mounted to a wall at a height of approx. 2.20m/7.2ft. So your ropes can rest in a naturally ventilated environment.

Where do I find detailed information about rope conditioning and care of my jute ropes?

Currently this information is only available in German language on our website www.theropestry.de. We are however in the process of translating this information into English and it will be available soon.

Wear of the rope loop

The "loop" (or bight) of your rope is the most susceptible section of your rope to wear and tear. First signs of wear and tear will probably occur here. As soon as you notice this, shorten your rope by about 10 - 20 cm/ 4 - 8in and knot the new end. The loop now moves to the next free position. With this simple trick you'll extend the lifespan of your rope.

Ropes that are already worn should no longer be used for high-risk applications.

Discrete packaging

We ship our goods in plain brown or white cardboard boxes, very small shipments in a jiffy bag.

However, for consignments destined for countries outside the EU (e.g. Switzerland, USA, Canada, Australia etc.), we must provide a brief description of the goods on the customs declaration. Ropes and blindfolds are described are jute ropes and scarves.

My ropes got dirty, how can I clean 'em?

If the ropes are superficially soiled then the best method is to wipe the ropes down with clear, preferably odourless, alcohol.  This also disinfects them to a certain degree. Use a linen cloth and soak it with alcohol and then wipe the rope down in one and then in the other direction.

If dirt has penetrated deep into a rope, then we throw it away.

Washing with clear water: Jute is hydrophilic; this means it swells up when put into water. Thereby the ropes get thicker and shorter and need to dry under tension. 8kg per rope end gives the best (dry-)result (for example by tying a bucket filled with water etc. to each end). So washing the rope with water is possible, but the ropes’ shape and integrity may be affected. For this reason, we do not recommend it.

My rope untwists at the rope bight (centre loop) into its individual strands? What can I do?

This can happen when a rope is exposed to a great deal of weight or stress on the same area over and over again. To counteract this, pull your rope in both directions, i.e. once from right to left and from left to right, through your tightly closed hand to equate the twist across the entire length of the rope. Repeat this process until the twist of the rope at the bight is in balance again.
For the nerds: this action is also called "to dress" a rope.

If the wear and tear on the bight is already clearly visible, we recommend that you shorten your rope by around 10-15cm on one side, so that the central bight position moves to a new, intact part of the rope.
