Making It Work
Alguns anos atrás, minha vida criativa tomou um rumo inesperado. Durante uma viagem com meu amor e amor da minha vida, Bill, entramos em uma tabacaria na Cidade Velha de San Diego. Em uma prateleira inferior havia várias caixas de charuto vazias à venda. Eu fui imediatamente atraído pela beleza das caixas e também pelo seu potencial. Eu posso fazer algo com isso, eu pensei, e ali mesmo que eu não sabia ainda, Trail's End Collection nasceu. Comprei as caixas, e embelezava-as com botões antigos e moedas da minha coleção. Você deveria vender isso, me disseram. Incentivado pelos meus filhos e pelo Bill, comecei a vender minhas criações online em agosto de 2011. Expandi-me para feiras de artesanato alguns meses depois, e depois comecei a vender em uma loja de tijolos e argamassa no final de 2013. À medida que minha loja cresce, meu compromisso com o uso de itens usados em segunda mão nas minhas criações, para salvá-los do aterro sanitário e dar às pessoas a chance de apreciar a beleza dessas coisas.
Moro em uma pequena casa em um subúrbio de Los Angeles com dois dos meus três filhos, sogra, dois cachorros, dois gatos e muitos visitantes (duas e quatro patas). Meu espaço de trabalho agora é um pouco limitado: prateleiras em um canto do meu quarto, uma mesa dobrável que eu escondo atrás da porta quando não estou em uso, e muitas caixas de armazenamento debaixo da cama. Espero ter uma sala de trabalho dedicada um dia, mas por enquanto, eu me dou bem. Isso me impede de ir ao mar em mercados de pulgas e vendas de imóveis, pelo menos!
A few years ago, my creative life took an unexpected turn. While on a road trip with my sweetheart-and-love-of-my-life, Bill, we wandered into a tobacco shop in Old Town San Diego. On a bottom shelf were several empty cigar boxes for sale. I was immediately attracted to the boxes’ beauty and also, their potential. I can do something with these, I thought, and right there, even though I didn’t know it yet, Trail’s End Collection was born. I bought the boxes, and embellished them with old buttons and coins from my collection. You should sell these, I was told. Encouraged by my children and by Bill, I started selling my creations online in August 2011. I expanded to craft fairs a few months later, and then began selling in a brick-and-mortar shop late in 2013. As my shop grows, so does my commitment to using secondhand and used items in my creations, to save them from the landfill and to give people a chance to appreciate the beauty of these things.
I live in a small house in a suburb of Los Angeles with two of my three kids, mother-in-law, 2 dogs, 2 cats, and lots of visitors (two- and four-legged). My work space right now is a bit limited: shelves in a corner of my bedroom, a folding table that I stash behind the door when not in use, and lots of under-the-bed storage bins. Hopefully I’ll have a dedicated workroom one day but for now, I make do. This keeps me from going overboard at flea markets and estate sales, at least!
