Announcement    Handmade hemp apparel, handmade & customized for you in our airuma home studios in Berlin. Each dress is a single item production, which means you can order each dress in every color & change the pattern according to your preference!

We are an international team consisting of 2 Berlin based designers & producers and 2 embroidery artists from Peru. We work with hemp fabrics because hemp fiber production is 100% sustainable and hemp textiles have so many benefits for the skin:

- poison-free since hemp cultivation does not need pestizides
- sweat-absorbant - hemp fibers can absorb 5 times more water than cotton
- antifungal - hemp textile prevent fungal inflammations
- antibacterial - since it works against these nasty bacteria which produce the sweaty smell, hemp textiles help you to stay fresh all day long
- cooling and silky - hemp jerseys provide air on hot summer days
- UV-resitant - with over 95% UV-absorbtion hemp has a higher rate than any other fibre, comparable only with linen
- super durable: while cotton clothing falls into pieces just after a few years, hemp apparel is super strong and durable for 10 years or much more, depending on treatment and intensity of use

If you're interested, you can always order a color or fabric swatch before you place your order, in order to choose your perfect material & shade.

About

airuma - a hemp love story

We are a young handmade fashion label from Berlin - in our cosy home studios we create unique dresses out of hemp, the fiber of the future! Every garment that we make is a single item production; we imagine designs & construct sewing patterns, we sew, we dye, we batik and we paint on fabrics… Each airuma garment is handmade with a lot of passion, love and dedication, individually for you, item by item.

Our label is radically different. We do not limit ourselves by the word „trend“ and do not produce according to strict saisonal rules, but follow our creative flow. Different from conventional fashion labels, we never throw any of our designs out of the collection after one season, instead, our collection always grows. In our shop, you find versatile basics as well as really fancy pieces for special occasions. By our made-to-order-principle we avoid unwanted stock and an unsustainable production „for the waste bin“. Also, we can individualize each item according to your preference when you make your order; color, shape, fit, length – practically everything is adjustable, even changes in the original design pattern.

When hearing „hemp garments“ for the first time, many people immediately imagine the classic unsexy potato sack look, whereas our vision is that organic fashion can look just sexy and amazing. We work with hemp jerseys, which are are toxin-free, comfortable, not scratchy at all, much more durable than cotton and super healthy for your skin.

The creators behind airuma are Magdalena and Katja - we are two soul-sisters that know each other since childhood days. Already in our teenage years, we have sewed or upcycled our own clothing. Practically everything garment we used regularly was hand-made by ourselves at that time. Then followed some years of traveling, studying, blogging, motherhood, and finally....

The idea of airuma was born! In 2013, we got the legendary „hemp bible“ by Jack Herer in our hands. Since the lecture of that book, we are convinced that hemp could be one of the key solutions for a sustainable future on our planet Earth. It feels like a call to work with this amazing material, and we followed this vision until today.

Over the years, we have expanded our original project idea to a new, fascinating dimension; since 2015, we entertain a fair partnership with an indigenous artist couple from Peru, Magnolia and Wilson. They are members of the indigenous group of the Shipibo, who are true masters of a visionary inspired embroidery art. We integrate their magnificent embroideries in our hemp dresses – creating unique pieces of art together, and generating a fair and stable income for a Shipibo family, allowing them to maintain their ancestral tradition in the modern world. Despite our transatlantic distance , Wilson and Magnolia are part of our team now, and to work with them is a pleasure and great honor for us. We still need some time in order to finish all our Shipibo dresses we have in stock - in case you're interested, you can ask for images of the embroideries and pre-order a dress.
