It was the late 90's when hemp jewelry made a comeback and I was introduced to this vintage "hippie craft" as a middle schooler. My mom bought me a couple of hemp jewelry instruction books and told me about how she used to stay up late making macrame plant hangers back in the 70's when she was single.
Finishing college with a degree in zoology, I wanted a way to express my lifelong passion for the colorful Tropics, but with the matured taste of a biology graduate. But one of my favorite childhood trends - hemp jewelry - was stuck in the grubby, "middle-schoolish" style of the pre-teen past, befitting neither matured taste nor professional life.
Classy yet casual, natural yet durable, simple yet versatile was the kind of jewelry I was looking for but couldn't find. So after brainstorming, designing and experimenting with many bundles and sizes of hemp cord and tubes of beads, what resulted is the beginning of BeachFlea: a hemp bangle with a clean, versatile design of colorful glass seed beads worked into lark's head knots and made of only two natural materials - hemp and glass!
BeachFlea designs are heavily inspired by my 2009 road trip to south Florida, a region lushly colorful, wildly natural and full of beautiful wonders on every beach! BeachFlea's purpose is to enable you "keep the beach within arm's reach" with sophisticated hemp bracelets made of joyful colors, natural materials and optimistic vibes!
