natural dyes, hand-dyed fabrics & yarns, new age looping, online classes

As a kid, I lived on a dairy farm in Indiana. Now I 'farm' willow and Japanese indigo in rural northern Wisconsin. I use plants I grow and gather (weeds, my dad would call some of them) for dyeing silk scarves, wool yarns and other fibers. Leaves, blossoms and other plant parts get used fresh, frozen and dried. In early summer, we peel willow bark to use for dye, then burn the peeled sticks to make willow artist charcoal. In all we do, my husband and I try to make the best use of our resources and live a sustainable lifestyle. That's how I was raised, and those habits have served me well in the 17 years I've been self-employed as a fiber artist.

When I'm not dyeing or collecting dye materials, I teach surface design and stitching techniques like looping. Looping is an ancient tradition that keeps evolving as contemporary fiber artists put their own spin on it. Students from all over the world have learned about looping in the online classes I produce. Never heard of it? Your ancient ancestors probably knew it by another name. Intrigued? You can learn more about looping at http://donnakallnerfiberart.com/ecourses. I even offer a free introduction class online.

Maybe it sounds a bit odd to mix natural dyes and Stone Age fiber techniques with 21st educational technology. But it all fits into the life we've crafted here in Wisconsin's Northwoods. Thanks for stopping by!

    Woodworker, Harvest Hand

When not building hand-crafted bentwood landing nets for fly fishermen or rustic furniture, my husband Bill turns scrap wood into molds for looping materials kits and helps me harvest willow, strip bark and gather materials for natural dyeing.

Bill's sister Jean is a professional longarm quilter. We enjoy collaborating on projects that incorporate my hand-dyed fabrics. Jean's own Etsy shop is at https://www.etsy.com/shop/quiltingbyjeannie
