Sculpting the flat

Beeing a creative person as long as I can remember, I started my working life as a graphic designer in print media and packaging, then moved on to web design. Eventually I decided to develop my sculpting skills, stepped away from computer design, and enrolled in bachelor’s degree course in design for artisans at The Academy of Crafts and Design - Gut Rosenberg in Aachen, Germany.

During my studies I researched how to transform altered and unwanted books into new objects. This experimental journey and thesteady interchange with other creatives including carpenters, metalsmiths, bookbinders etc. influenced the designs and techniques I now use.
In 2010, for my final exams, I designed my first paper jewellery collection, and since then I work in my own small art business.

I’m fascinated by the fanned out cut edges of stacked book pages - the incredible variations in appearance and pattern continually thrill me.

Subsequently, I have been transforming book pages, coloured paper, scripts, letters and other paper into meaningful jewellery. I have trained myself in metalsmithing techniques such as forging, soldering and stone-setting to be able to incorporate the paper elements with gems and precious metals.

The book sculpting, cutting and carving books into faces, is my way to express that
a book is way more than just a read, especially when it's no longer wanted for its original purpose. It is something one needs to feel.
