Fascination & Inspiration
Those who were below saw the tower from near and far and in good weather they even saw the top. The few who were upstairs saw everything, except in bad weather there they saw nothing. Thanks to the escalating air traffic, Google Maps and the introduction of numerous other navigation systems, almost all people now have the opportunity to look down on the world from above at any time. The classical construction of the central perspective is no longer the only valid one. We can virtually make huge leaps, fly and let ourselves fall, zoom in until every atom becomes visible or look at our Earth from space, and we did it so many times until the inner horizon tilted vertically.
This text led me to work with atlases during an art project at the university, and since then the fascination has not let go of me. Initially, it was collages and paper cuts, and eventually I started tying notebooks from my favorite cards.
Under the brand kartostrophe I now sell handmade notebooks. The inside pages are made of various recycled paper remnants (old college blocks, exercise books, drawing blocks, colored paper blocks,...) – the covers are bound with card motifs from old atlases (from flea markets, Willhaben and Grandma's bookshelf) – the booklets are bound with a beeswax reinforced and impregnated embroidery thread.
All kartostrophic notebooks are adorned with the discreet logo on the cover and the slogan "Wherever you go becomes a part of you somehow" by Anita Desai on the inside of the cover.
Due to time constraints, there are only one or two photos of most notebooks here. The photos that show the inside pages of the booklets are often also sample pictures.
More detailed shots of my work can be found on Instagram @kartostrophe. The notebooks are all made in the same style: simple thread stitching, the branding is always the same.
