How I came to create natural jewelry from nuts.

I've always loved creative design. During the school holidays I let off steam in wood workshops and as a little girl I didn't want to go to art festivals before I had taken a close look at all the jewelry stands.

But in my communication design studies after graduating from high school, I noticed despite creative challenges that I lacked handicrafts and in 2011 intuitively registered for a jewelry course alongside my studies.

I remember how the course description sparked joy in me when I read that in addition to precious metals, you could also bring natural materials that I wanted to find immediately on the next walk with my friend. We strolled through the parks in our Berlin neighborhood and suddenly my eyes fell on half a walnut shell, right in front of my feet. And then I saw the nut with completely different eyes. I looked at her closely and was enchanted by her simple beauty and her protective vault. That's when I got the idea to turn this nut shell into a jewelry pendant by incorporating pearls into its interior. I didn't know how yet, but that's what I wanted to learn.

And so I was the only one besides the silver-melting, metal soldering and ring-hammering course participants to deal with my wooden loot from an inspiring walk through the green capital.

After I discovered the walnut as a jewelry object, I researched more nut shells. However, the hazelnut particularly appealed to and convinced me with the stability of its walnut wood as well as its shape and colouring. From the lecturer I learned to drill, mill and grind the shell wood filigree. He also taught me how to use fine pliers and wires.

From here on, I was addicted to jewelry and founded my own label Zimelie in 2012 with great pleasure. Since then, I love to create something with my hands every day that other people enjoy!
