CycleCraftDesigns: Recycled Bike Parts Jewelry
Ho iniziato a fare gioielli nel 2005. Tutto è iniziato quando all'organizzazione che ho fondato, Recycle-A-Bicycle, è stato chiesto di istituire un programma per ragazze come una più grande sovvenzione STEM (Scienza, Tecnologia, Ingegneria, Matematica). Abbiamo pianificato di offrire una classe earn-a-bike in cui le ragazze avrebbero costruito una bicicletta e l'avrebbero mantenuta. Con nostra sorpresa, le ragazze hanno scioperato. Non volevano sporcarsi le mani in un negozio di biciclette! Quindi abbiamo proposto un progetto di creazione di gioielli che li avrebbe fatti decostruire le biciclette in bit utilizzabili per perline (ingegneria), e quindi scrivere un piano aziendale di base (matematica). Dopo aver vinto un premio Bank of America per il loro business plan, le ragazze volevano affrontare una sfida più grande. Così, alla fine, la maggior parte delle ragazze ha deciso di costruire una bicicletta. Otto su 12 hanno portato a casa una bicicletta.
Da quel momento, ho insegnato molti laboratori di gioielleria come un modo per creare un dialogo sulla protezione del nostro ambiente attraverso il ciclismo e il riciclaggio. Ho anche realizzato e venduto gioielli in molte fiere dell'artigianato eco-orientate e conferenze ciclistiche come un modo per sostenere le attività ciclistiche giovanili.
La sospensione della programmazione pratica per i giovani, a causa del COVID, ha portato alla mia decisione di avviare CycleCraftDesigns. È un modo meraviglioso per essere creativi e rimanere in contatto con i miei amici nel mondo del ciclismo e per fare nuove amicizie.
I started making jewelry in 2005. It all began when the organization I founded, Recycle-A-Bicycle, was asked to set up a program for girls as a larger STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) grant. We planned to offer an earn-a-bike class where the girls would build a bike and keep it. To our surprise, the girls went on strike. They didn't want to get their hands dirty in a bike shop! So we proposed a jewelry making project that would have them deconstruct bikes into usable bits for beads (engineering), and then write a basic business plan (math). After winning a Bank of America award for their business plan, the girls wanted to tackle a bigger challenge. So, in the end, the majority of the girls decided to build a bike. Eight out of 12 took a bike home.
Since this time, I have taught many jewelry-making workshops as a way to create a dialogue about protecting our environment through cycling and recycling. I have also made and sold jewelry at many eco-oriented craft fairs and bike conferences as a way to support youth cycling activities.
The suspension of hands-on youth programming, due to COVID, led to my decision to start CycleCraftDesigns. It is a wonderful way to be creative and keep connected with my friends in the cycling world, and to make new friends.
