Soy Kathryn. Diseño y elaboro a mano los marcos y recuerdos de BellaForm Creative desde mi casa en las montañas del oeste de Carolina del Norte. Cada pieza está pensada para ser observada con atención: un objeto para capturar un momento o un pequeño detalle que se aprecia al mirarla por segunda vez.

Tras una carrera en el diseño que me llevó por todo el país —años como diseñador de productos y cinco años como profesor de diseño industrial en NC State y Arizona State—, pasé gran parte de ese tiempo viendo cómo las ideas se fabricaban en el extranjero y se optimizaban para reducir costes. Nunca me convenció del todo. Cuando nació mi hija, quise crear algo que reflejara mis valores, así que me establecí en Carolina del Norte: primero en Raleigh, luego en Durham y ahora en Black Mountain, donde vivo con mi marido, nuestra hija y nuestros dos perros: uno, un dulce y anciano ejemplar que suele dormir la siesta, y el otro, un precioso y adorable collie, a la vez que exasperante.

El nombre surgió de mi hija. "Bella" significa hermosa en italiano; así la llamaban los desconocidos cuando era bebé en Italia, deteniéndose en la calle para decirle "bambina bella". Se me quedó grabado. "Forma" es la formación en diseño que moldea mi manera de concebir cada objeto. Juntas, dieron origen a BellaForm Creative.

Vivo en los Apalaches del Sur, a menudo llamados la capital mundial de las salamandras, hogar de más especies de salamandras que en cualquier otro lugar del planeta. Es un lugar que inspira profundamente. Por eso creé el marco de Anfibios de los Apalaches, y por eso mis diseños siempre vuelven a lo que me rodea: las salamandras, los pájaros cantores, los jardines, las formas de las montañas. Dibujo cada ilustración yo mismo, corto e imprimo las piezas exclusivas con una cortadora láser y una impresora 3D, y luego termino y ensamblo cada pieza a mano: hecha cerca de casa y construida para durar. Ese mismo instinto se manifiesta también fuera del estudio, en los huertos de frutas, verduras y plantas polinizadoras que cultivo para mi familia, los pájaros y las abejas.

Actualmente hago marcos y sujetalibros, y pronto empezaré a hacer casitas para pájaros y adornos de jardín. Si tienes algún encargo personalizado, me encantaría saber de ti.

I'm Kathryn. I design and make BellaForm Creative's frames and keepsakes by hand, from my home in the mountains of western North Carolina. Every piece is meant to reward a closer look — something to hold a moment, or a small detail you catch the second time around.

Following a design career that took me all over the country — years as a product designer, and five years as a professor teaching industrial design at NC State and Arizona State — I spent much of that time watching ideas get made overseas and optimized for cost. It never quite sat right with me. When my daughter was born, I wanted to build something that matched my values, so I put down roots in North Carolina: first Raleigh, then Durham, and now Black Mountain, where I live with my husband, our daughter, and our two dogs — one a gentle old sweetheart who mostly naps, the other a gorgeous, lovably exasperating collie.

The name came from my daughter. "Bella" means beautiful in Italian — it's what strangers would stop to call her when she was an infant in Italy, pausing on the street to say bambina bella. It stayed with me. "Form" is the design training that shapes how I think about every object. Together they became BellaForm Creative.

I live in the Southern Appalachians — often called the salamander capital of the world, home to more salamander species than anywhere else on earth. It's a place that gets into the work. It's why I made the Appalachian Amphibians frame, and why my designs keep coming back to what's outside my door: the salamanders, the songbirds, the gardens, the shapes of the mountains. I draw every illustration myself, cut and print the proprietary parts on a laser cutter and 3D printer, then finish and assemble each piece by hand — made close to home and built to last. That same instinct shows up beyond the studio, too, in the fruit, vegetable, and pollinator gardens I keep for my family, the birds, and the bees.
