Presentación

Coloriousity (El Gato con los Pies de Trapo): A social and desing project

Coloriousity ( El Gato con los Pies de Trapo) is a social and design Project, where we intervene Mexican footwear design (Panam) with traditional Chamula embroidery. Also we are starting a shoe line with our designs, Merceditas and Regina are the first models, elaborated in an artisan shoemakers. The design is intended to use as many craft products available at our location (the highlands of Chiapas) making links with other artisans.
We strongly believe in the Mexican design and we have dedicated ourselves to promote it whit our work. We are a group of women: 13 indigenous Chamula embroidery woman (ethnic group located in the highlands of Chiapas), a designer and a communicologist mestizo-Mexican.
Unlike other cultural and business initiatives, the desire of this project is to create a platform of work where all are part of the process of creative production. In this sense, each embroidery print her individuality to the product, making it a unique object, with great symbolic, cultural and economic value. Each shoes are signed by the artisan-creator in this way acquired a personality thus acquires its own personality, and also, keep the symbolic contributions of traditional embroidery, appealing to the traditional practice and articulating their worldview and existing uses of the same. For that reason, it seems very important that the construction project is collective, and that is why we all manage to work in confidence and in a friendly environment.
Coloriousity ( El Gato con los Pies de Trapo) preserves and appreciates the tradition of handmade embroidery which is in danger for the expansion of the embroidery machine. We create a source of employment for the artisans where their work is valued and paid fairly, since their work is thorough, sensitive and creative. In this sense, the project generates healthier economies, understanding health horizontality production control, in which the embroiderers earn more for their labor, as well as their creativity, and the customer gets the product not only an object of aesthetic quality, but also ethics. This project promotes awareness of responsible consumption.

HOW THE IDEA WAS BORN?
In January 2009 I went to live in the city of San Cristobal de las Casas, where I was fascinated by the diversity of traditional textiles of different indigenous groups around.
However, personally I do not feel comfortable wearing hupiles (indigenous traditional blouses), even though I love them! But carry the craft tradition in other clothes. Then I started thinking how I could wear these wonderful works in an element with which I feel comfortable using.
Coupled with this, and it may be the reason that made me have the pressure to do something, was because I need it some work. In San Cristóbal many industrial designers are not required and urgently needed a job, so I had to create something. On the other hand, I lost a pair of seneakers that I liked a lot and I wanted to replace them with even more beautiful. Coincidentally my mother had me give a Panam (the brand that started embroidering).
In July one day suddenly the idea of intervening with Chamula embroidery, my new tennis Panam came. But I didn’t want to do it with the people of the craft market because they always have jobs and are often the intermediaries of the artisans.
That is when the adventure started, walking on the San Antonio del Monte´s streets whit the sneakers on my hand and asking all the women who went against us if they would embroidery my shoes.
I was a little disappointed because no one wanted to embroider my sneakers, when Margarita, a curious girl who was selling roasted corn outside a house, approached to ask what we wanted. I explained that I'd like to embroider my sneakers and she agreed to do it. I asked her to show me her clothe to see the embroidery and choose the ones I liked the best.
3 week later I went to Margarita’s house to collect the experiment; I was surprised by the result. My sneakers were beautiful and saw potential in that mixture. So I proposed to Margarita to work together, she say yes without giving a second thought. Soon Martha and Dominga, Margarita’s sister in law entered the project.
Gradually more and more women have joined the group, whether is family, neighbors and friends, all are officially embroiderers and they enjoy their job.

Welcome to Coloriousity, where the team of the design and social project, El Gato con los Pies de Trapo, offers you a range of products made, in its entirety, in Mexico.
Coloriousity is the online store of El Gato con los Pies de Trapo. We are not brokers, we are a group of women —seven Chamula (an indigenous group of the State of Chiapas, Mexico) embroiderers, a designer and a Mexican-mestizo sales representative—. The design part of our project consists of embroidering Mexican shoes with traditional motifs of the region.

These are 100% Mexican products.

The aim of this project is to build a work platform that allows us all to be part of the creative process. Collectivity is a crucial element of this project and that is why we all agree on trusting each other and working together with joy.

Each shoe is different and unique; our craftswomen materialize on them different symbols of their worldview and creativity. They are all signed by their designers.

We value and try to preserve the tradition of handmade embroidery, threatened by the development of the embroidering machine. This project, besides being a source of work for these craftswomen, allows them to trade their products fairly, respecting their detailed, thorough and delicate craftsmanship.
