About LDMDesign-
I am an Environmentally conscious artist and designer based in Huddersfield, West Yorkshire. The ethos of LDMDesign is to consider the environment in every step, from the creative process to packaging and sending my creations. Additionally creating pieces that evoke happiness, and memories with the hope of an emotional connection, increasing longevity and promoting sustainability.
I studied Printed Textiles & surface pattern design at Leeds arts university, graduating in 2015. I always had the dream of creating my own business and wanted to do this sustainably. At university, I specialised in screen printing and the natural dyeing of textiles. I love the originality and organic nature of the hand processes, when creating my business I needed to come up with a solution of how I could achieve this in my small studio at home, I dabbled with Lino/relief printing at university although this was not my specialism, I enjoyed the process (not the finger cuts). Lino printing was the solution! And has given me the opportunity to use hand processes in a small space. I'm pleased to say I am no longer stabbing my fingers with my tools. In the future, I would like to try to get into other hand processes, watch this space!
I come from a creative background, my late mother was an artist and she has always been my idol and inspiration, as a child I would sit in her studio at my grandmas and was completely amazed by her beautiful paintings and creations. She mainly used watercolour paints hence my utter admiration of watercolour painting, I tend to use this process and then edit digitally.
Within my design process I am constantly coming up with solutions of reducing waste, reusing offcuts of paper, using eco conscious art materials and limiting unnecessary packaging.
My cards are locally at enterprise print to reduce carbon footprint, and with the added bonus of supporting a local business. They are printed on FSC certified 300gsm paper.
The envelopes and tissue paper I use are sourced from eco-craft made of 100% recycled paper and are both recyclable. My cards are naked to reduce unnecessary waste, they simply come wrapped In some tissue.
For my prints, I used Lino, non-toxic water-based inks and Somerset 300gsm archival paper which is made from 100% cotton and is a by-product from the textile industry. My tote bags are made from organic cotton, screen printed by hand and sourced from an ethical company.
About my current designs-
Sea life range- I created this range to create awareness for sea life that are critically endangered species from negative environmental impact, including Green turtle, coral, Blue Whale and Hawksbill Turtle. I created the tote bags and cards with the slogan 'less pollution more solution' to get people talking and thinking about the phrase linking it to the visual of the critically endangered Hawksbill Turtle.Plant lyf range- I created this range because of my love of indoor and outdoor plants. Plants are crucial for our ecosystem and have so many benefits. Wellness and mindfulness is something that links to plants and flowers. They can have so many meanings for each individual person. Gardening however big or small indoor or outdoor can be so rewarding and uplifting!Story behind 'Family of sunflowers' print- An emotional one be warned, I created this print for my twin little sisters 18th birthday, there are 4 sunflowers in the print one for myself, my sisters Molly and Macy and our mum Michele. Our mum died in 2009 when my sisters were only 6 and myself 15 we were a great gang, mum gave us all so much love and care we have so many beautiful memories of her, one of her favourite flowers and something that always reminds us of mum are sunflowers, although losing our mum has been the hardest things for us all to deal with the print is actually to represent the happiness we shared with her and evokes the times we had together when we look upon it.
