THE MAKING OF....
Thanks to a careful selection of materials and great attention to detail, each of our environmentally friendly creations is unique, characterized by the highest quality requirements, sanded by hand and treated with our home-made blend of natural oils. We also use a special non-toxic and moisture-resistant wood glue and all of our machines are powered by 100% solar energy.

AGAVE: OUR SUSTAINABLE RAW MATERIAL
The wood from the only European desert is only harvested by us when the agave plant has completed its life cycle and has completely died, an aspect that makes it a unique 100% sustainable raw materials supplier.
Due to its unique characteristics such as its rapid growth of up to 1.5 meters per week, agave wood could be described as a mixture of bamboo and balsa wood. It is harder than oak and at the same time lighter than balsa, as colorful as tropical hardwood, warm in sound, easy to work with and, above all, as "wood from the desert", it has a high educational value.

THANK YOU VERY MUCH!!
With the purchase of our products you collaborate with our Artisan Association PITA ESCUELA del Río Aguas, a center for music and environmental artistic education that provides activities that are experienced with all senses in direct contact with nature.

Wow - this is a very beautiful musical instrument, such a piece of workmanship! I am in a classic rock band, Perfect Crime Band of Boston, and we play certain songs that a guiro is used, notably Gimmee Shelter by the Rolling Stones. This guiro looks cool, sounds even cooler and is just a pleasure to hold and play. It shipped pretty quickly from Spain and I just love it. It is a welcome addition to my percussion selection. Much love! ❤️🧡💛💚💙💜

Received bird flute on 1/11/2021 along with a 3-set of shakers, bird flute is versatile in different sounds that can be achieved depending on the amount of breath pressure that one applies, overall a very good little musical instrument 👍👍

Absolutely beautiful, my friend loved it and continues to bring it up in conversation. To quote him, "WHAT'D YOU GET A KAZOO FROM, THE QUEEN???"
Not to mention the shop owner is a lovely guy who helped out when the package seemed to be stuck in transit, which was by no means on them. I'd highly recommend this product and any other from this shop as well!

Video summary: Just a little Video-Workshop about How to Make a Deluxe Wooden Kazoo.

IN THE BEGINNING THERE WAS A DRUM...

What began with the creation of a drum later developed into a much deeper passion concerning the integral usage of the agave. Since then, the ongoing research in this area has become a way of life for Tim Bernhardt (founder of the Agave School), who uniquely specializes in the use of the agave wood to give it new life in various forms and uses.

“On my first travel through Andalusia, back in November of 1993, I got to know Don Pedro, a Spanish artist from Extremadura, who showed me how to make my first drum from the dry flower stems of the agave. My passion for this plant began when I got to know its unique lifecycle and the warm sound of my very first ‘Timbe Drum’. As I was mostly interested in woodwork, music & travelling, I thought that I had possibly found the perfect opportunity to combine my three interests into a way of living.

After returning to Hamburg in 1994, I decided to go back to Andalusia (Spain) to make more of these fabulous instruments! Ten years of drum-making followed in which I made about 250 Timbe Drums, some of which have even been used in professional recording studios.

In the following years, I lived like the birds, spending sunny Andalusian winters in the south and fresh German summers in the north. In 1998, I organized my first drum-making workshop and started to pass along the knowledge that I had acquired thus far.

In 2002, I settled down in Andalusia and became more and more interested in the botanical aspects of the agave and its multiple uses. After 10 years of drum-making, I started creating all kinds of different musical instruments and handcraft articles like lamps, masks and ‘magic villages’. Finally, I managed to utilise each single millimeter of the Agave flower stems.

Furthermore, in 2008, I began to settle in Los Molinos where I founded the Association Pita-Escuela del Río Aguas. The Agave school is the place where I now live. The project is developing and is continuously opening doors for new educational and musical exchanges.

On November 3rd of 2013, we celebrated the 20th anniversary of that very first ‘Timbe Drum’, where it all began.

What began with the creation of a drum has now developed into a much deeper passion, and the explorations of the integral uses of the Agave plant has become a way of life for me. Being a pioneer in the specialization of the Agave wood, with my work I give new life to the wood in the form of art and music. Since the beginning, my fascination for this plant has kept my passion alive and I am always developing new ideas. The story never ends... and in November of 2021, we will celebrate the 28th anniversary of this unique project!”
