Mi hija y yo oramos juntas todas las mañanas y todas las noches, y estudiamos la Biblia juntas. Conoce la Biblia extraordinariamente bien. Pero es durante nuestros paseos vespertinos cuando realmente se abre, y en uno de esos paseos me dijo algo que me dejó sin palabras. Intelectualmente, dijo, lo tiene todo. Solo le faltaba esa conexión a nivel emocional.
Quería darle una charla. Soy padre; es lo normal. En vez de eso, volví a casa y empecé a escribirle un cuento sobre una niña llamada Millie, una nueva amiga llamada Grace, increíblemente amable, que se niega a abandonarla por mucho que la rechacen, y una pequeña moneda de plata con la palabra SÍ en un lado y NO en el otro. Lo escribí con la esperanza de que, en algún punto de la historia, vislumbrara lo mucho que la quieren, y que lo que ya sabía en su cabeza finalmente llegara a su corazón. Dejo que cada lector descubra quién es realmente Grace. Mi hija lo sabe.
Cuando terminamos el libro, ella y yo decidimos que la moneda no debía quedarse en la ficción. My daughter and I pray together every morning and every night, and we do Bible studies together. She knows her Bible remarkably well. But it's on our evening walks that she really opens up, and on one of those walks she told me something that stopped me in my tracks. Intellectually, she said, she's all there. She was just missing the connection in her heart.
I wanted to lecture. I'm a dad; it's the factory setting. Instead I went home and started writing her a story, about a girl named Millie, a relentlessly kind new friend named Grace who refuses to give up on her no matter how many times she's pushed away, and a small silver coin with YES on one side and NO on the other. I wrote it hoping that somewhere in that story she would catch a glimpse of how deeply she is loved, and that what she already knew in her head would finally make the trip to her heart. Who Grace really is, I leave for every reader to discover. My daughter knows.
When the book was finished, she and I decided the coin shouldn't stay fictional.
