Sometimes you just want to keep things simple! There are so many techniques for starting a pastel painting. In my previous demo downloads I have shared some of the underpainting techniques. In this demo I go back to basics. I show you have to have success with regular Canson Mi-Teintes paper and soft pastels. Quick, simple and expressive!
The subject is a marsh or wetland landscape in warm morning light with water.
This demo shows the development of the painting from the block in using soft pastels thorough the build up of layers using workable fixative. I talk about supplies, as well as tips for working on Canson paper and using fixative in a pastel painting. I also provide my reference photo should you wish to follow along and paint your own version.
If you would like to try a simple quick approach to painting with pastels consider this digital download! I also have created a time lapse video of this demo available on my YouTube channel

The demo has 21 pages and 28 color photos.
I like to paint demos. I really don't mind painting in front of a group and sharing what is going on in my head as a painting develops. I don't mind being interrupted with lots of question. The more the better. Sure not every demo is successful but I always try to make sure that the group learns something. I find that for a shy person I have a lot to say when it comes to talking about my passion.
I have been posting mini demos on my blog for the past two years. But they are condensed versions and don't quite compare to a real live demo. I have been wanting to find a way to share my demos with others without doing a video. I don't have the equipment for that. So when I discovered that Etsy offers sellers the ability to offer digital downloads I thought it would be the perfect way to share a more detailed demo in PDF form.
This download can be viewed on your computer or printed and stapled into a booklet. It includes my step by step approach to painting landscape complete with 35 full color photos and description of each step. I include information on my supplies as well as tips for painting grasses.
The demo is a pastel painting but I use the same approach to paint landscapes in oil and acrylic so the information will be helpful even if you don't use pastels!
