Rob and his team seem, to me, to be in need of some mature guidance.

Your participation here this morning is more substantive public communication than we've seen from the 'team.' I hope you'll continue to participate.

but i totally agree with you about search. we've hired a ton of engineers this year and search is one area we are investing heavily in. fixing search is not a simple task. but the company is committed to it and spending heavily on it.

Thanks for posting, Fred. I'll chime in, too.

We have spent an enormous amount of time on search this year. The entire infrastructure was rewritten, giving us the framework we need to make our next big round of improvements.

We've made speed improvements, drastically reduced the # of servers required to run search, launched location search etc. etc.

There will be bigger changes next year, starting with the listing process. We need better data when items are listed, in order to make a lot of the improvements in search.

We've also spent a lot of time this year building our our personalization infrastructure. The default for sorting search results needs to be personalized relevance, not the rather brutish "most recent" that we have now. This is one the most important changes we need to make.

Keep in mind that search is a tool for buyers to find items they like. We need to do our best job targeting items to people, based on what we know about the people.

Therein lies my problem. I want a search engine driven by ME rather than by an algorithm that's based on Etsy rummaging through my drawers.

Can we all come rummage through your drawers toosoon?

Rokali, I always assumed that Etsy's job was to make the site the best place for sellers to sell their goods. That means selling tools.

I never thought, expected, or wanted Etsy to do the targeting. The people you think may like my items may not be who actually does. I know my items and I know my customers.

What I looked for, from Etsy, was a way to successfully list my items ~ quickly, accurately, and at a reasonable cost.

Etsy's job was to provide the proper tools and then to allow my listings to be seen.

By doing away with the Jump Box in Search, by limiting Search results, by having a really horrible Search ... Etsy has effectively limited the way my listings can be and will be seen.

As a seller, I really didn't look for Etsy to find buyers for me. I didn't look to Etsy to find friends for me.

Maybe I was way off base, but I signed on to what I thought was a selling platform which would provide the tools to effectively showcase my goods.
