Most social networking sites are for "personal, non-commercial" use.

Some have advertising arrangements and some offer some businesses commercial use agreements, but you must contact them about those situations.

If you have a regular Twitter, Stumbleupon, Myspace or other social networking account you should not be using it for free advertising.

Here is some information from a few sites. You need to read the Terms of Service or Terms of Use for each site to get all the information you need.

For example, Flickr will delete your account and all your photos if they find you using it for business.

In addition, you agree not to use the Service or the Site to:

upload, post, transmit, share or otherwise make available any unsolicited or unauthorized advertising, solicitations, promotional materials, "junk mail," "spam," "chain letters," "pyramid schemes," or any other form of solicitation;

1.4 Restrictions. Multiple StumbleUpon accounts held by the same individual are subject to termination unless expressly authorized in advance and in writing by StumbleUpon. Accounts created with the primary intention to promote a product or service are considered "SPAM" and subject to termination unless expressly authorized in advance in writing by StumbleUpon.

Spam investigation

Publishing, posting or sending unsolicited email, junk mail, “spam”, chain letters, promotions, or advertisements for products or services (except where expressly permitted) is against the Terms of Service. Commercial or promotional use of Twitter is allowed, and we do welcome feed-based accounts. Many companies create valuable, opt-in relationships with people on Twitter. It's important to us, however, that the Twitter community receives only the content they'd like to receive. The following behaviors may cause an account to get flagged for spam investigation and/or suspension:

* a large number of people block the profile in question
* a large number of people write in with spam complaints for a specific profile
* aggressive following (a large number of people are followed in a short amount of time)
* extremely imbalanced follower/following ratio

* updates consist of duplicate or repeating links and/or text
* updates consist mainly of links and not personal updates
* links in updates disguise the real content of a link given in a misleading or deceptive way.

Use by Members. The MySpace Services are for the personal use of Members and may be used for promotional purposes as well, but direct commercial endeavors may only be used if they are specifically endorsed or authorized by MySpace. MySpace reserves the right to remove commercial content in its sole discretion. Illegal and/or unauthorized use of the MySpace Services, including collecting usernames, user id numbers, and/or email addresses of Members by electronic or other means for the purpose of sending unsolicited email or unauthorized framing of or linking to the MySpace Website, or employing third party promotional sites or software to promote profiles for money, is prohibited. Commercial advertisements, affiliate links, and other forms of unauthorized solicitation may be removed from Member profiles without notice or explanation and may result in termination of Membership privileges. MySpace reserves the right to take appropriate legal action for any illegal or unauthorized use of the MySpace Services.

Flickr has deleted accounts in the past for saying 'available in my etsy shop' even without a link, so definitely be careful!

I always wondered how people found their way around twitter with people posting their new item links all over it. :)
