Polymer Clay Tutorial Diva Designs Controlled Marbling Technique Using Scrap Clay

In this tutorial, I will teach you my technique for marbling or blending polymer clay using a method that allows you to add depth and texture and precisely controlled placement of color in striped patterns.

Typically, clay is marbled by twisting random colors of scrap clay into a snake or log and rolling it through the pasta machine several times. Each pass through the machine blends the clay more and more. I found the problem with that method, for me, at least, is that you cannot control the interaction of color, and a pretty surface color and pattern can be ruined when a muddy color in the blend underneath the surface color breaks through after you roll the sheet through the machine one time too many. You never know how far to take it, and I always seemed to take it too far. More often than not, I ended up with a lot of grayish brown, muddy streaks, so I set about to find a way to control the colors and patterns.

My method is easy and a fool-proof way to achieve both subtle and bold color shift and to create painterly effects in your work.

The best thing about this technique is that it utilizes scrap clay. It also does not require a high level of skill to successfully create the marbled blends. If you can condition clay and possess the basic tools, materials and supplies every polymer artist uses on a daily basis, you can use this tutorial.

If you are new to polymer clay and do not have these every day items, email me and I can help you with a list of the basic items you will need in addition to the materials and tools list included for this specific tutorial, none of which are expensive or difficult to find.

Unlike my previous tutorials, this tutorial is all about the technique. I do not include color recipes or special projects, other than one project which shows you how to create a pair of earrings from start to finish, and there is a specific purpose for including that project.

Please note that it is not necessary to complete all the lessons in the tutorial. If you choose to do so, you will need alcohol inks, specifically Pinata alcohol ink, for one of the lessons. If you live in a country outside the U.S., postal regulations prohibit delivery of items containing alcohol from being mailed through the post office. It is my understanding they must be mailed via ground delivery, meaning UPS or FEDEX, basically; so if you do not have a source inside your country for Pinata inks, you may not be able to use that particular lesson.

The tutorial also contains numerous tips from me which I have learned through trial and error and happily pass along to you, which I hope will help make the creative process easier, more fun, and more successful for you.

My goal in writing my tutorials is to make you feel as if I am sitting right beside you as you create. If you have any questions about the process or need clarification about any part of the tutorial, I am always available to help if you need assistance.

Please note this tutorial contains my tried and true method of creating marbled striped jewelry. To my knowledge, I am the only person who uses this particular method to marble clay. The instructions are the result of my own experimentation and have not been taken from anyone else's methods. There are bound to be similarities between my method and other people's, but this process is entirely mine in creation.

Some basic knowledge and experience with polymer clay is helpful, but not absolutely necessary. The instructions are aimed at the novice and the experienced clayer. It does not contain a skill level.

Trish Hodgens at www.polyclayplay.com has generously agreed to offer my customers a discount off the supplies in my tutorials that she carries. Trish will carry as many of the supplies and materials as possible used in my tutorials. Each tutorial has its own discount code, and I will email it to you upon purchase. If you don't hear from me within 24 hours, please contact me here through Etsy.

If you want to order a copy for someone else, I would be happy to deliver it to an email address of your choosing as a gift from you. You may not share a print-out of, or your actual digital copy of, this tutorial in a polymer clay class, or guild meeting, either in person or digitally via Skype or other internet outlets or social media websites. I regret that I even have to mention this, but unfortunately, it has become necessary to address this issue.

Thank you!

"THIS IS THE BEST TUTORIAL EVER !!! You cannot imagine the ease of the instructions and the beauty of the results! And to have instructions for scrap clay too!"

"This is such a great, detailed tutorial. I was a little hesitant because I'm only just learning to create in polymer clay and wasn't sure if it would be worth it, but it so is! Everything is clearly explained, and the technique is very clever. Lynda is super awesome to buy from, too. She's friendly, quick to answer any questions that might come up, and she's a great teacher. Thank you so much for sharing!"

"One of the most comprehensive and informative tutorials I have purchased in a long time. And by following the clear instructions I was able to achieve the effect demonstrated on the very first try. I would very much recommend SCDiva tutorials to anyone wishing to learn new ways to work with polymer clay."

"I have several of Lynda's tutorials. With this one, she continues to share her tricks and tips in a simple to follow, very well done tutorial. You're learning from one of the masters of polymer clay when you buy one of Lynda's tutorials. Jammed with great information, it's definitely worth the affordable price."

"Another amazing tutorial from a truly talented artist. Tried it out as soon as I received it. VERY easy to understand as it is EXTREMELY well written and detailed with lots of hints and tips. Can't wait to see what this artist comes up with next :)"

"WOW! I haven't finished reading your tutorial yet, but I know already that it is a real WINNER. What you did with that ugly scrap clay is unbelievable. No more throwaway clay. You are really a magician. There's no end to what you can pull out of your hat. Thank you for sharing your secrets with those of us(probably just me) who can't pull anything out of a hat but our heads. Now there's hope. Thank you so much."

"Your tutorials are always well written and beautifully illustrated. But this one makes my heart sing. Color and more color. Now my head is swirling with ideas and I can't wait to get started. Thank you, Lynda!"

"I haven't been this inspired to create in a long, long time. Such a simple process, but it opens up a world of possibilities. It was well worth the wait, my dear!"
