Ground with Both My Families
Comencé a vender en Etsy cuando mis amigos querían piezas e impresiones de mi arte. Al principio me costaba mucho dejar de lado los originales, se sentían demasiado personales. Entonces me di cuenta de que eso es lo especial de mi arte: ¡es personal!
Cada vez que paso un par de días sin hacer arte, noto que me siento ansioso y desconectado. Me acomodo poniéndome a mí y a mis ya-ya en papel. Algunas personas lo consiguen a través del ejercicio, la religión o el vino. Encuentro ese lugar "ahhh" cuando escribo un diario. Respiro de manera diferente y me siento bien con el mundo.
RubyShea -- ¿Qué hay con el nombre?
El nombre RubyShea proviene de mis verdaderos amores: mi familia de sangre y mi familia elegida.
Rubí es la "sangre". Nacida y criada en Texas, mi Gramma Ruby cultivó las fresas más pequeñas y dulces que jamás hayas probado. Amaba a la iglesia metodista y a su familia: sus dos hijos, sus esposas, seis nietos y 13 bisnietos. "Ruby" representa a mi familia de sangre, que, a pesar de que están en el Medio Oeste, están conmigo todos los días. Sé que no podría estar aquí sin ellos y la historia desordenada y real en la que me fundamentan.
Shea es para mi familia "elegida": Scott Shea, mi esposo en este matrimonio respetuoso, bi-costero de 13 años y nuestro astuto hijo de 9 años impulsado por el deporte (¡quien, si hubiera sido una niña, se habría llamado "Ruby"!). Esta familia también incluye a mis amigos, mis hermosas e invaluables hermanas Yemma y Tribe que me mantienen en esta tierra.
I started selling on Etsy when friends wanted pieces and prints of my art. I had a hard time letting go of originals at first --they felt too personal. Then I realized that's the special thing about my art: it is personal!
Whenever I go a couple of days without making art, I notice I feel anxious and disconnected. I settle myself by putting me and my ya-ya's on paper. Some people get that through exercise, religion, or wine. I find that “ahhh” place when journaling. I breathe differently and I feel all right with the world.
RubyShea -- What's with the name?
The name RubyShea comes from my true loves: my blood family and my chosen family.
Ruby is the "blood". Born and raised in Texas, my Gramma Ruby grew the smallest, sweetest strawberries you ever tasted. She loved the Methodist church and her family -- her two sons, their wives, six grandchildren, and 13 great-grandchildren. "Ruby" stands for my blood family, who, even though they're in the Midwest, they're with me every day. I know I could not be here without them and the messy, real history they ground me in.
Shea is for my "chosen" family -- Scott Shea, my husband in this 13-year, bi-coastal, respectful marriage and our wily, sport-driven 9 year-old son (who, had he been a girl, he would've been named "Ruby"!). This family also includes my friends -- my gorgeous, invaluable Yemma and Tribe sisters who keep me on this earth.
